Intelligent electronics in Oktyabrsky: Apparat begins the world concert tour in Kiev
On April 30, electronic musician and composer Sasha Ring, aka Apparat, will perform a new concert program in the October Palace. This live show will be the first item on the artist’s new tour, which will also be joined by Joshua Eustis, leader of the Telefon Tel Aviv IDM project. And all this to the accompaniment of video and light from the Pfadfinderei formation, responsible for the visual component of the super-band Moderat.
Apparat and Telefon Tel Aviv together in Kiev is not the first time. Two years ago, in 2018, they were the headliners of the Promin 'party at the Platform art factory. This time everything is much more serious. Multi-instrumentalist Justis will play a full-fledged live, presenting the album "Dreams Are Not Enough" - a landmark release for the artist, which became the first studio work in the last ten years. Apparat, on the other hand, is bringing to the Ukrainian capital a composition of 7 musicians and a new theater program, intended more for thoughtful listening than for dancing. And promises to surprise even the most devoted fans. In the end, this Sasha can do better than anyone. After all, for almost two decades, the Ring has been a star, a pillar and, in a way, a gray cardinal of European electronics.
At first glance, Apparat's work seems like musical chaos. In an instant, exploding complex multilayer canvases, more like magic spells than music. Spells transporting the listener to the distant universe of fragile minor, eclectic drama and pleasant "bright sorrow."
The history of Apparat began in 1997, when a guy from the East German province moved to Berlin, starting his career as a techno-DJ. Two years later, he worked with might and main with the legendary Marco Haas aka T. Raumschmiere on the multi-genre label Shitkatapult.
It was then that Sasha began to gradually move away from the classical dance sound and experiment with might and main. Actually since then he is constantly on the verge. On the verge of techno, electro, glitch and IDM. Feelings, sounds and emotions.
The turning point in the work was 2009, when ravers Sebastian Shari and Gurney Bronsert with Modeselektor dragged Sasha into Moderat. A project that brought a certain segment of the electronic underground to the level of world festivals. By creating true electronic hymns of the time, where Apparat pop elegy harmoniously overlapped Modeselektor’s cloudy techno melody.
This time in Kiev, Sasha will present both new material and compositions from last year's LP5 release. The record, which even won a Grammy nomination, is the result of weeks of studio ring jams and session musicians. From these jams, the artist, as a result, created an insane amount of samples, which became the basis of new tracks. Minimalistic and fascinating. Drum machines, strings, synthesizers, wind instruments - all this, together with Ring's lyric tenor, weaves into an exquisite sound lace, which is impossible not to fall in love with.
Ringu at the October Palace will be made up of an old friend and colleague, Joshua Justis, Telefon Tel Aviv project leader. Back in 2001, two friends from New Orleans became the decoration and "fresh breath" of the American IDM (intelligent dance music) scene. Having conquered both underground clubs and festival scenes around the world. Since 2009, the project exclusively deals with Joshua, working in parallel with a bunch of music groups, including the iconic Nine Inch Nails.
The visual light part specially designed for the new tour by Pfadfinderei will become the cherry on the music cake. It was this team that was responsible for the fantastic stage design during Moderat's performances for years.
