The comedy " The Servant of Two Masters " is the pinnacle of the work of the 18th-century Italian playwright Carlo Goldoni (1707-1793).
Director – David Petrosyan
The action of the play " The Servant of Two Masters " begins with the engagement of Clarice - the daughter of Pantalone and Silvio - the son of Dr. Lombardi. Often, such scenes mean the finale of the play, but in Goldoni, a recognized master of comedies, with their unpredictability of events and situations, everything is the opposite. For him, the main intrigue is ahead.
In this, as in other plays, the author recreated the true "spirit" of Venice with its fun, carefreeness of the eternal carnival holiday, its theatricality, disguises and reincarnations. Here the element of freedom, freedom-loving rages, where there are no fixed norms and canons, where wit, invention, an incredible desire for love and goodness reign. The engagement is interrupted by the appearance of Truffaldino, as he recommends himself - "the servant of his master" Federigo. This statement introduces dissonance into the circle of those present, who are already in anticipation of wedding preparations. The first to come to mind is Pantalone, the father of the bride, who is convinced that Federigo died at the hands of his daughter Clarice's former lover - Florindo. That is why he agreed to her marriage to Silvio.
In an effort to earn more money, the scoundrel Truffaldino, in addition to Federigo, also hires himself as a servant to Florindo, not knowing that under this name, disguised as a man, Beatrice is hiding, who is looking for her beloved Florindo. So, the situation is at a standstill. All the participants in this crazy action have gathered at Don Brighello's hotel: Clarice with her fiancé Silvio, Beatrice in disguise, madly in love with Florindo and ready to do anything to be with him. How to untie this knot, unite the loving hearts and, most importantly, not forget about himself? Truffaldino begins a crazy game. Lyricism, excitement, sharp mind, irony and self-irony come in handy. A lie ceases to be a lie. He skillfully spins situations. This is his nature, the meaning of life. The carnival element fills his being and draws everyone into its whirlpool. Truffaldino, just like his author, knows and feels: to live, to love, to fight for one's happiness one must be here and now. Every moment that is given to a person. There will be no other chance.
