The performance "The Beggars" in Kyiv

“The Beggars” is a production by director Radek Stempin based on the work of the ancient Greek poet-playwright Euripides. Written two and a half thousand years ago, the drama may seem like a retelling of modern news. A society trapped in a choice trap: balancing between the fear of being abandoned by allies and the risk of complete dependence on them. The responsibility of rulers for the future of the state. Historical events that radically change the fate of people, and the principles that define the modern world… – Indeed, this is a problem present in the lives of Ukrainians today. Director Radek Stempin notes that although his goal is not to draw direct historical parallels, the analogy between Thebes and Russia, Athens and the USA, Argos and Ukraine gradually becomes obvious…

An ancient Greek tragedy that is still relevant today

The Peloponnesian War lasted eight years, but one of its most horrific events was the Battle of Delium in 424 BC. The bloodshed dragged on for over a week, inflicting enormous losses on the Athenians. But the real blow lay ahead: the victorious Boeotians violated one of the most sacred norms of the ancient world by refusing to return the bodies of their dead for burial.

Only two years after this tragedy, a new play by Euripides appeared on the Athenian stage. This was an unprecedented case - no poet had previously addressed events that were still alive in the memory of contemporaries. However, Euripides does not recreate the realities one by one, but invites the audience to look at the tragedy through the veil of time. He changes the names of the characters and, as it were, invites them to a session of collective experience and reflection - a kind of therapeutic ritual that helps to see the pain of the past through the eyes of the present.

The performance will not leave anyone indifferent. Come!
