The concert consists of two sections. In the first section KSOH will present traditional spirituals, in the second will sound "Mass in blues" by composer Will Todd (UK).
Spirituals are traditional African American spiritual songs. This genre originated during the enslavement of blacks. Spirituals are a musical reflection of their life and way of life at that time. Spiritualists at one time greatly influenced the development and, in fact, the emergence of jazz.
Villa Todd's "Mass in Blues" was the result of the composer's love of improvisation, which had a decisive influence on his creative and performing career. The work sounds texts typical of traditional masses, but placed on jazz harmonies. "Mass in Blues" is a brilliant combination of driving jazz rhythms and pure, strong choral sound against which the solo piano and solo soprano are intertwined in a magical musical outline.
