Swan Lake is the most popular ballet of classical heritage. His theatrical fate can testify to all the significant aesthetic and artistic changes that the ballet theater of the twentieth century has undergone. Tchaikovsky's masterpiece attracted the attention of many choreographers of the world.
The premiere of Swan Lake took place on February 20, 1877 at the Bolshoi Theater of Moscow. The script was written by V. Begichev and V. Geltser, production choreographer Vaclav Reisinger.
The composer proposed symphonic music for choreographic incarnation. The appearance of such a score was demanded by the ballet theater of the late nineteenth century. By this time, the efforts of the Petersburg choreographer Marius Petipa, first of all, had already created the polyphonic form of the ballet performance as a symphony. The music of “Swan Lake” consisted of traditional dance numbers. For example, the form of a waltz, whose “magic formula” Tchaikovsky was fascinated by, turned out to be important for the composer’s artistic and dramatic tasks. In Tchaikovsky's music there is a complex and precise musical dramaturgy, which was to become the basis for the corresponding stage-choreographic interpretation.
But Reisinger created his own ballet, relying on scriptwriting, using music only as a melodic-rhythmic basis for dancing. The performance was unsuccessful. The scenario was overloaded with unnecessary details and did not have a coherent logical line of action.
February 17, 1894 at the Mariinsky Theater of St. Petersburg again turned to the production of "Swan Lake". The ballet master M. Petipa together with the conductor and composer R. Drigo performed a new orchestration. A lot of permutations and notes were made to the music, and later everyone who turns to the composer’s work will repeatedly blame them. But it is these changes in the musical text that, oddly enough, made it possible to create an imperishable choreographic masterpiece, emanating not from the primary script, but from the spirit of the ballet's musical score.
Having brought the scenario project closer to the music, Petipa invited choreographer Lev Ivanov to take part in the production, giving him the romantic swan scenes.
In their community were born undeniable masterpieces of choreography, created on the basis of the principles of metaphorical thinking.
This is the lyrical soulful song of Odette about women's fate and love in the second act and the brilliant energetic pas de deux of Siegfried and Odile. The image of Odette marked the creation of a new type of ballet heroine: not brilliant, not just elegant, but lyrical.
Many choreographers turned to Swan Lake. It should be noted productions of A. Gorsky, A. Vaganova, Yu. Grigorovich.
In accordance with the aesthetic, ethical and artistic standards of the era, the romantic fairy tale during the twentieth century turned into domestic drama with realistic-psychological historical justification for events, then into a philosophical parable about the duality of the human I, then into a psychologically pointed narrative about sensual fantasies and drama a hero.
