Vakula, a good blacksmith and a talented painter from Dykanka, is hopelessly in love with Oksana, the daughter of the Cossack Chub. At carols on the night before Christmas, Oksana jokingly promises to marry Vakula if he gets her the shoes that the tsarina herself wears. Realizing that he will never be able to fulfill this request, Vakula wants to drown in grief. But the devil unexpectedly falls into the hands of a boy in love, who came to seek love comforts for his mother, the seductive Solokha. And suddenly... An interesting idea comes to Vakuli's mind...
