Drama Theater named after Maria Zankovetska: history

The National Academic Ukrainian Drama Theater named after Maria Zankovetska in Lviv is well known among the citizens and guests of the regional center, as the institution is one of the oldest Ukrainian theaters. Located at a slight distance from the bustling center, the Lviv Drama Theater named after Maria Zankovetska was built by patron Stanislav Skarbek in the 19th century and is the first National Theater of Ukraine and one of the oldest Ukrainian drama groups.

Initially, the theater was operating in Kyiv, where the first performance of Volodymyr Vinnichenko's play "The Nailed" took place in 1917. Subsequently, the group traveled with performances in Ukraine for more than 20 years, before finally moving to Lviv in 1944. The fate of the Zankovetska theater was unique and thorny: it survived forced sovietization, repression by the authorities and a wave of the rise of national culture, which required new, unconventional expressions and reformations. However, this did not prevent the Maria Zankovetska Drama Theater from becoming one of the best theaters in Europe and being a laureate of numerous Ukrainian and foreign festivals.

Capacity and area of the theater

The capacity is 1460 seats, and the total area of the building is monumental - 17.5 thousand m2. The building impresses even demanding theatergoers, because the institution occupies the territory of an entire quarter, bounded by Lesya Ukrainka Street, Svobody Avenue, Prince Yaroslav Osmomysla Square and Teatralnaya Street.

The repertoire of the Zankovetska theater includes the works of recognized contemporary playwrights and classics, both domestic and foreign. Perfect acting skills and professionalism of the entire creative team of the theater are always a guarantee of numerous sold-out performances.
