Kherson Theater named after Mykola Kulish: past and present
Mykola Kulish Kherson Regional Academic Music and Drama Theater in Kherson is an institution with a rich history, which, unfortunately, also had black pages marked by the Russian occupation. However, today the institution continues to work, creating new performances and implementing new art projects - proving that Ukrainians are strong and indomitable.The theater was founded in 1936. Then the institution was opened under the name Kherson City Ukrainian Drama Theater. Since 1990, he has been named Mykola Kulish. The modern name was given to the institution in 2005. In the first days of the occupation of Kherson, the theater served as a shelter for families who were left homeless or in need of shelter. Members of the theater team, who remained loyal to the country, were scattered all over the world. Even so, the work of the theater continued on the basis of the Kyiv stage.
Immediately after the liberation of Kherson, the Mykola Kulish Theater under the leadership of Oleksandr Kniga resumed work in a safe arthab in a shelter. During September-June 2023/2024, the following events took place:
- 14 prime minister;
- 3 productions of plays from the theater repertoire;
- 119 performances and concert programs in Kherson and the region, Kyiv, Odesa, Mykolaiv, Chernihiv, Cherkassy, Uzhhorod;
- 170 master classes and other important events.
It is also important that the Music and Drama Theater named after Mykola Kulish continues to host the Melpomene of Tavria International Theater Festival, which will be held from September 7 to 14 in 2024 in Kherson and Mykolaiv.
The structure and repertoire of the Theater named after Kulisha
The theater has several stages:- Big stage;
- Theater-cafe;
- Scene "Under the roof";
- The scene "Under the circle";
- A scene on a stage;
- Open air theater.
Among the famous productions of recent times are performances for children and adults: "You will be amazed, as the witch will say", "Kitska in memory of the darkness", "Kytygoroshko against the Vikings", "The legend of the Dragon", "Baba Prisya, or At the beginning and at the end of time" and others.
