The Pride of Lviv and One of Ukraine’s Most Important Art Centres
The Lviv Philharmonic began its activities in 1902. The new music venue of the city of Lviv was located in specially redesigned premises of the theatre of Count Stanisław Skarbek. The auditorium had a capacity of 1,095 seats. During the first season alone, more than 128 concerts featuring the symphony orchestra took place. More than 115,000 guests attended the events.
A few years later, the Philharmonic ensemble moved to a new building at the present-day address of 7 Myroslava Skoryka Street. The building stands out for its beautiful architecture both outside and inside. The two halls have excellent acoustics and can accommodate 500 and 300 visitors, respectively. The venue’s highlight is a 19th-century organ, which was previously located in a Dominican church. In 2020, the institution was named the Myroslav Skoryk Lviv National Philharmonic.
Events Held at the Lviv Philharmonic
Following Ukraine’s independence in 1991, the institution became an important part of the musical life not only of the regional centre but of the entire country. The Philharmonic offers its visitors:
- evenings of classical and chamber music performed by the symphony orchestra;
- concerts by jazz and contemporary ensembles;
- performances by participants of various competitions and festivals;
- competitions, exhibitions and master classes;
- concerts by folk ensembles and other exciting events.
Today, three orchestras operate at the Lviv Philharmonic. Every year, more than a thousand events take place at the venue, catering to the widest range of audience tastes. Volodymyr Syvokhip has been the director and artistic director of the Lviv National Philharmonic since 2006.
