Chernivtsi Drama Theatre named after O. Kobylianska: an Architectural and Cultural Gem of the City

The Chernivtsi Academic Regional Ukrainian Music and Drama Theatre named after Olha Kobylianska is the main attraction and key building of Theatre Square in the regional center. The theatre is one of the most famous and beautiful in Ukraine. Since its foundation, the venue has hosted performances by legendary Enrico Caruso, Solomiia Krushelnytska, Maria Bieșu, Austrian drama actor Alexander Moissi and others.

History and Location

The history of the Chernivtsi Music and Drama Theatre named after Olha Kobylianska began long before its modern troupe was formed. As early as 1876, the first permanent theatre was built in Chernivtsi – although it was made of wood. It served its artistic purpose until 1904. The following year, on October 3, 1905, a new theatre building was solemnly opened in the city, becoming one of the most prominent cultural symbols of Bukovyna. Operas and operettas were performed in the hall, while dramatic and comedic productions, as well as singspiels based on the works of Western European classics, were staged. The discerning Chernivtsi audience was captivated by performances from outstanding masters of opera and drama.

Its own permanent troupe appeared here in 1940. It was then that the «Chernivtsi State Ukrainian Drama Theatre» was established on the basis of the Kharkiv State Theatre of Revolution. In 1954, the institution was named after the prominent Ukrainian writer Olha Kobylianska. The theatre received academic status on July 22, 2008, and in 2023 its performance space was expanded – a new workshop stage was opened for audiences, making it possible to work differently with chamber and experimental theatrical formats. One of the city's best-known cultural institutions is located at 1 Teatralna Square.

Architectural Features and Capacity

The Chernivtsi theatre is a true architectural fantasy, where velvet, gold and lavish decoration create an atmosphere of theatrical celebration even before the performance begins. The building was designed by Viennese architects Ferdinand Fellner and Hermann Helmer – authors of theatre buildings that were already well known throughout Europe. They were invited to work in Chernivtsi after completing major projects, including in Vienna and Odesa.

The theatre's facade is designed in the Viennese Baroque style, complemented by Art Nouveau elements. The entrance is decorated with high reliefs and sculptural compositions inspired by stories from ancient Greek mythology. The central place on the pediment is occupied by a sculptural group featuring Melpomene, the patroness of theatrical art, and angels. Decorative pediment compositions are located above the windows, while niches along the side facades contain busts of prominent figures of world culture – Ludwig van Beethoven, Johann Wolfgang Goethe, Friedrich Schiller, Franz Schubert, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and Joseph Haydn. Later, this artistic series was complemented by a bust of Taras Shevchenko.

The theatre's interior is no less impressive. The auditorium, consisting of the stalls, bel étage boxes and amphitheatre, accommodates approximately 800 visitors and is distinguished by good acoustics and visibility. Four proscenium boxes and 31 tiered boxes are organically integrated into the luxurious interior. Baroque stucco, intricate ornamentation, decorative elements, cherry-colored drapery, gilding, chandeliers and sconces made of Czech glass create the theatre's distinctive appearance, which is often described as one of the most beautiful in Ukraine.

The Troupe

The Olha Kobylianska Chernivtsi Theatre brings together the experience of several generations of artists. It employs acclaimed stage masters and young actors, People's and Honored Artists of Ukraine, directors, choreographers, set designers and musicians of the pop-symphony orchestra. This creative interaction shapes the distinctive character of the troupe, which not only continues the traditions of the Bukovynian theatre school but also constantly seeks new forms of communication with the audience.

The theatre's director and artistic director is Ivan Butniak.

The Theatre's Repertoire

Over the years of its artistic history, the theatre has staged more than 500 productions based on works by Ukrainian and foreign authors. One of the most significant pages in its creative history was the production «Earth», based on the novella by Olha Kobylianska and directed by Vasyl Vasylko. The performance achieved widespread success far beyond Bukovyna.

Today, the theatre works with several stage formats at once. Alongside the main stage, a modern workshop stage operates, while the creative team continues to experiment with space and ways of interaction between performers and the audience. A notable example was the opening of the 121st theatre season with the premiere of «The Bukovynian Madonna» in a «stage within a stage» format. In this case, only 60 spectators are seated directly on the stage alongside the actors, finding themselves at the very center of the theatrical action.
