About the venue

City House of Culture: Rivne’s Central Venue

Residents of Rivne know well that the city’s main hub of creative life and leisure is the City House of Culture. This institution, with a history spanning 70 years and rich traditions, certainly does not sit idle waiting for exciting event posters and announcements – creative energy is always in the air here, accompanied by loud applause.

History and Location

The Rivne City House of Culture officially began its history on January 28, 1955, although during its first years it operated in a completely different location. Initially, the institution was housed in a one-story building on Mytskevycha Street. Before the Second World War, it belonged to the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of St. George. After Soviet rule was established, the building was nationalized, the original bell tower was demolished, and the premises later became home to the newly established City House of Culture.

In 1961–1963, the cultural center moved to T. H. Shevchenko Park, where it is still located today – at 3D Soborna Street. The new building was completed in 1963. During its first years, it functioned primarily as a cinema and concert venue, and its opening was marked by a large concert featuring Rivne amateur groups. In the spring of the same year, construction began nearby on a four-story service wing. It housed rehearsal rooms, dressing rooms and offices.

Architectural Features and Auditorium Capacity

The architecture of the City House of Culture reflects the character of public buildings from the 1960s – monumental, restrained and practical at the same time. The central part of the facade is adorned with a massive portico, while the wide grand staircase majestically emphasizes the venue’s ceremonial character.

In 2015, the institution’s stage and auditorium were reconstructed. Today, the auditorium seats 581 visitors, making it the largest cultural space in Rivne by seating capacity. The venue is equipped with modern lighting and sound systems, while the audience seating is divided between the stalls, amphitheatre and balcony.

Another distinctive feature of the City House of Culture is its spacious and bright Exhibition Hall. Large panoramic windows in the foyer and exhibition space fill the premises with daylight while allowing guests to enjoy the surrounding greenery of the park. The building itself organically completes one of the central alleys of T. H. Shevchenko Park. Century-old trees planted on the grounds of the former Lubomyrsky estate have also been preserved around it.
