Transcarpathian Music and Drama Theater in Uzhhorod: History and Location

The Transcarpathian Academic Regional Music and Drama Theater named after brothers Yurii-Avhustyn and Yevhen Sherehii is known among lovers of the performing arts for its productions based on works by classics of Ukrainian and world drama, as well as original works that have also won public favor and reflect the region's national character.

The Transcarpathian Regional Ukrainian Music and Drama Theater traces its history back to its founding on January 1, 1946. The first production to welcome audiences to the new Temple of Melpomene was «Under the Chestnut Trees of Prague» by K. Simonov.

In 1957, the institution was renamed the Transcarpathian Ukrainian Drama Theater named after Oleksandr Dukhnovych. It was not until 1962 that the theater received its current name.

The Uzhhorod Drama Theater is located at 12 I. Chendei Street.

International Activities

Throughout its history, the music and drama theater in Uzhhorod has presented hundreds of productions to audiences. In addition to performing in Ukraine, the theater has staged productions in other countries, including Lithuania, Estonia, Moldova, Kazakhstan, and Romania. This extensive touring geography has been made possible by the region's unique location - Transcarpathia borders several European countries. Today, the Transcarpathian Academic Regional Music and Drama Theater continues to act as a «cultural diplomat», successfully combining national identity with a contemporary European context.

Venue Capacity and Auditorium Features

The main auditorium of the Uzhhorod Drama Theater can comfortably accommodate 760 spectators. However, this number may vary depending on the requirements of a particular production. Seating is available in the amphitheater, stalls, and balcony. Good visibility and acoustics ensure an enjoyable experience from every seat.

The Small Stage is used for experimental performances and psychological dramas, such as «Variations Enigmatiques». Here, seating is limited, and the audience sits very close to the actors.

In recent years, the auditorium's seats have been replaced with more modern and comfortable ones. The lighting system has also been upgraded. The theater has also adopted accessibility principles, providing an entrance for wheelchair users and expanding its range of inclusive productions.

Repertoire

The Uzhhorod Drama Theater actively collaborates with other theaters in Ukraine and Europe and participates in festivals and competitions, presenting its own productions to a wide audience. Its repertoire features works spanning various genres, periods, and formats:
