About the venue

Ivano-Frankivsk Theater named after I. Franko: history and location

Ivano-Frankivsk National Academic Drama Theater named after I. Franko is one of the recognized leaders of theatrical life in Ukraine. The institution is located in the center of Ivano-Frankivsk at 42 Nezalezhnosti St.

The premises were built in 1980 according to a typical project - similar buildings can be seen, in particular, in Sumy and Simferopol. Architecturally, it belongs to constructivism, which in the European tradition is more often defined as brutalism. However, another, much more accurate term has taken root in the theater itself - "Hutsul modernism". This definition is quite justified, because the unique interior decoration, created by local Hutsul masters, was awarded the highest state award in the field of culture - the Shevchenko Prize.

Additional symbolic significance to this space was given by the fact that in 2019, Kosiv ceramics were included in the UNESCO Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. It is in the foyer of the theater that an exclusive ceramic panel made in the traditions of Kosiv ceramics is placed.

The stages of the theater named after I. Franko

The theater has 7 stage areas:
  • main stage;
  • stage on stage;
  • chamber stage;
  • basement stage;
  • stage-border;
  • stage-foyer;
  • stage-patio.
The creative troupe also retains unique experience working in non-standard locations - from Pip Ivan Mountain and the Chernobyl zone to city squares, castles, museums and palace complexes.

The place of the I. Franko Drama Theater in the cultural life of the city and the country

In parallel with the renewal of the theater in accordance with modern European principles, the team actively participated in the formation of the cultural image of Ivano-Frankivsk as one of the most influential art centers of Ukraine. Resonant events, festivals "Time of the Theater" and the festival of contemporary art Porto Franko became an integral part of this process.

In 2008, the theater was headed by Rostyslav Derzhypilsky, and later the institution received academic status. Work on the stage trilogy based on the works of Maria Matios - "Sweet Darusya", "Nation", "...almost never the other way around..." - became a landmark period in the creative history of the Frankivsk Drama Theater. It was then that the rhythm, aesthetics and general vector of the institution's development changed. In the eyes of the artistic community, the theater finally got rid of the "regional" label and established itself as an institution of a nationwide scale and all-Ukrainian sound. Rostyslav Derzhypilsky managed to form a strong troupe of leading actors and a close-knit team of like-minded people.

During the full-scale Russian invasion of Ukraine, the theater did not limit itself to showing performances. On its basis, the humanitarian logistics center "Resistance Movement - Assistance Movement" was created, which works to support internally displaced persons and soldiers of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.

Creative vector of the I. Franko Drama Theater

The Ivano-Frankivsk Regional Ukrainian Music and Drama Theater named after Ivan Franko has a powerful arsenal of creative solutions and bold artistic discoveries. Premiere performances consistently attract full houses, and the most important state celebrations traditionally take place within the walls of the institution.

A galaxy of famous directors, artists, actors, musicians and vocalists has grown in the team, whose creativity has ensured the theater's participation in numerous international, all-Ukrainian and regional festivals. Today, the theater lives a rich and dynamic artistic life - with constant renewal of the troupe, the arrival of young actors and increased attention from the mass media, which significantly strengthens the prestige of theatrical art in the region. The Frankivsk Drama Theater also actively tours – both in the cities of Ukraine and overseas.

The Frankivsk Theater has repeatedly declared itself with loud creative “explosions”, which each time reminded the cultural space of Ukraine of its active position. At different periods, such events were “Roksolana” by Lyudmila Zabashta, staged by Vasyl Smolyak, which was performed about 700 times, “Plakha” by Chingiz Aitmatov, “Shadows of Forgotten Ancestors” by Mykhailo Kotsiubynsky.

Rostislav Derzhipilsky and his team organically work with the laws of modern European theater, often ironically rethinking them in their own experimental projects – Hamlet, “Modigliani”, Romeo & Juliet. These performances, European in stage form and deeply Ukrainian in internal content, received high marks both in Ukraine and abroad. In its 85th anniversary season, the Ivano-Frankivsk National Academic Drama Theater named after Ivan Franko finally outlined the European vector of development, inviting leading directors from Ukraine and Europe to cooperate.

Theatre repertoire

The Frankivsk Theater has established itself as an “open-door theater” for leading contemporary directors – among them Stas Zhirkov, Maksym Golenko, Jules Audrey. The program line of recent years – “Theatre in the Access Zone” – determines active touring activity both in Ukraine, exhausted by the war, and beyond its borders. The collective performs in villages and citiesin the villages of Precarpathia, in the liberated cities of the east, directly in the locations of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, and also works with veterans and volunteers of the Ukrainian-Russian war. The code of the theater's creative and civic mission remains unchanged - uncompromising Ukrainian patriotism, which, in particular, is embodied by the productions:
  • "Glory to the Heroes";
  • "Fight for Ukraine";
  • "Kotygoroshko";
  • "Kaydash's Family";
  • "Natalka Poltavka";
  • "Kolyada ta i ples ...izprezhdy vika...";
  • "Solodka Darusya";
  • "Hutsulka Ksenya" and others.
The theater's repertoire is distinguished by its genre palette, combining modern Ukrainian and world drama, classics and experiments. Actively using the large and small stages, the team emphasizes the psychological depth, relevance of themes, musicality of performances and bold rethinking of literary sources.

Events taking place at the Ivano-Frankivsk Drama Theater

In addition to stage productions, the Frankivsk Drama Theater has become a powerful cultural and volunteer center, in which art is organically combined with public activity and lively initiatives. Therefore, along with productions of various genres for children and adults, the theater hosts:
  • musical concerts by stars of the domestic stage;
  • charity auctions;
  • art festivals;
  • excursions (BAIF Drama Tour);
  • creative evenings and more.
