Stryi City House of Culture: An Institution with a Rich and Continuing History
Construction of the magnificent building in the Secession style, a variant of Art Nouveau, was completed in 1906 on a large plot of land where a stadium had previously stood. Over the years, the building housed the Polish-Ukrainian sports and cultural society «Sokil» and the Stryi Music and Drama Theater. Since 1960, it has been home to the City House of Culture. As early as 1906, the building had its own heating system and was connected to the water supply and electric lighting. According to the original design, its interior included a theater hall, a gymnasium, a spacious balcony, and boxes. The building was partially extended in 1923.
Architecture, Capacity, and Location
Construction of the two-story building was supervised by Volodymyr Pidhორodetskyi and Władysław Gassman. The project was designed by V. Kryzhanovskyi. The facade is decorated with lotus-shaped capitals, ornamental stucco garlands, and rosettes, while the loggia features a metal railing adorned with wrought-iron floral patterns. The stalls, balcony, and boxes can accommodate around 400 spectators. Excellent natural acoustics and modern lighting technology ensure a comfortable viewing experience from every part of the concert hall.
This historic symbol of Stryi's cultural life is located at 18 Solomiia Krushelnytska Street, right in the city center. The House of Culture stands next to Taras Shevchenko Park. As Stryi is a relatively compact city, the City House of Culture can be reached on foot from both the railway station and the bus station.
