Odessa National Academic Theater of Opera and Ballet: history
Ever since its construction, the Odesa Opera Theater has been called "prima" among all the attractions of the world's cultural heritage. In terms of its architecture, technical data, planning and exterior decoration, it stands alongside the best theaters in Europe and the world. The authors of the project were the Viennese architects F. Fellner and G. Helmer - creators of unsurpassed theater buildings in many European cities. Construction lasted three years and was completed in September 1887.
The theater has repeatedly topped popular world and national ratings; the authoritative magazine Forbes included the building of the Odessa Opera House in the list of 11 most interesting sights of Eastern Europe. In 2022, the theater received the "Opera Oscar" - the most famous prize of the International Opera Awards in the "Best Theater" category. Recently, the theater, as part of the "Historical Center of the Port City of Odesa", was included in the UNESCO World Heritage List.
The beautiful forms also determined the beautiful meaningful content. World-famous Ukrainian and foreign masters performed on the Odesa stage. Among them are S. Krushelnytska, I. Patorzhynskyi, M. Gryshko, Z. Hristich, B. Rudenko, P. Virskyi, I. Moiseev, M. Lytvynenko-Wolgemut, M. Ogrenych, R. Sergienko, T. Ruffo, M. Battistini, M. Caballe and many others. It was here, for the first time in Ukraine, that such well-known and popular operas as "The Barber of Seville" by J. Rossini, "Lucia di Lammermoor", "Love Potion" by G. Donizetti, "Tosca" by G. Puccini were performed.
Repertoire of the Odessa Opera
The theater's modern repertoire includes more than 80 performances: world masterpieces of opera and ballet, works by domestic authors and exclusive concert programs; this is the international arts festival "Velvet Season at the Odesa Opera", which in 7 years has united twelve countries of the world in the Ukrainian artistic space; this is a special educational and artistic program for the youngest viewers and an alternative art space "Belietage-imperez".
