Lutsk City Palace of Culture: a Leisure Center with an Interesting History

A fire station, a cinema and even an ambulance station all operated until 1957 in the building that now houses the Lutsk City Palace of Culture. Today, the cultural heart of the city beats in unison with its artistic life. The venue hosts more than 1,000 events of various genres and formats every year.

Historical Background

The history of the Lutsk City Palace of Culture began in the autumn of 1957, when the first House of Culture opened in the city. The year before, throughout 1956, the premises were extensively renovated: the space for clubs and creative groups was expanded, and a cinema and concert hall was set up. In 1994, the Lutsk City Council changed the status of the venue, reorganizing it into the city folk House «Prosvita».

After a major reconstruction in 2006, carried out according to a design by Honored Architect of Ukraine Androsh Bidzilia, the building acquired its modern appearance and became a true landmark in the center of Lutsk. On September 30, 2009, by a decision of the City Council, the venue received its current name – Palace of Culture.

Features and Venue Capacity

The venue and its branches have become a base for numerous amateur groups, creative studios and clubs that have repeatedly represented Volyn’s art at Ukraine-wide and international levels. Today, the Palace of Culture has a 500-seat concert hall. In addition, the institution includes:

• 4 rooms for choreography classes;
• 15 rooms for clubs and creative groups;
• 2 dedicated rooms for storing stage costumes.

The stage space and permanent platform are designed to meet the needs of large creative groups, choirs and dance ensembles. The event venue is also suitable for official ceremonies and celebrations. The venue’s technical equipment is gradually being updated. Concerts in the main hall and large-scale outdoor events use modern mixing consoles, wired and wireless microphones, as well as sound systems capable of providing high-quality coverage both indoors and across the open-air area in front of the Palace of Culture.

The stage is equipped with modern LED lighting fixtures. For presentations, visual event design and film screenings, including documentaries and animation, the venue uses high-definition digital projectors and mobile projection screens.

Following major renovations, the venue has become more inclusive: the building now has an accessible entrance for wheelchair users and people with reduced mobility.

The Lutsk City Palace of Culture is located in the central part of the city at 1 Bohdana Khmelnytskoho Street, directly next to Teatralnyi Square. Its location near the city’s main square makes the venue convenient to reach from different districts of Lutsk.
