Poltava Regional Philharmonic: More Than 80 Years of Art Without Limits

The building that now houses the Poltava Philharmonic was constructed in the mid-20th century and initially served as the Great Choral Synagogue, and later as a workers’ club and House of Culture. The Philharmonic’s ensembles have played a continuous role in preserving and developing Ukrainian musical art in the region. The institution’s activities have also played an important role in establishing Poltava Region as one of Ukraine’s spiritual centers.

History and Location

The Poltava Regional Philharmonic began its history on September 24, 1943, shortly after the liberation of Poltava. The first concert groups were formed in the shortest possible time: in just two months, the musicians gave 65 concerts for military personnel. In the post-war years, the institution gradually expanded its creative capabilities – new ensembles appeared, genres became more diverse, and concert life grew increasingly vibrant. One of the important events of 1951 was the creation of a women’s theatrical song and dance ensemble. Another notable chapter in the institution’s history began in 2002, when a chamber orchestra was established at the Philharmonic.

Over the decades, the Poltava Philharmonic has welcomed many renowned musicians, composers and performers. For local audiences, this was an opportunity to meet representatives of the major academic stage in person and discover new artistic programmes.

The venue remains one of the most popular places to visit today. The Philharmonic is located in the central part of Poltava at 10 Hoholia Street. By public transport, the most convenient stops are «Budynok zviazku» or «Hohol Theatre», served by the city’s main routes. For motorists, the intersection of Hoholia Street and Pylypa Orlyka Street is a useful landmark. The building has convenient access, parking and accessibility features.

Restoration Works

The Philharmonic acquired its current stage infrastructure following extensive restoration. The work began in 2016 and lasted about five years. The main reason for the renovation was the need to restore the building after a fire in 2009. At that time, a fire broke out on the second floor during a children’s concert due to a short circuit, and the building suffered significant damage. While the restoration work was underway, the artists rehearsed and performed at other venues.

The restoration made the space more accessible to people with mobility impairments. The Philharmonic was equipped with barrier-free access, Braille navigation and facilities for wheelchair users. The venue also currently holds an international accessibility certificate.

Architecture, Technical Features and Hall Capacity

In its present form, the Philharmonic building combines historic character with a modern concert environment. Its architectural appearance was shaped in the spirit of Classicism with elements of Neo-Renaissance. The imposing facade with pilasters, decorative stucco and tall arched windows has a light, almost festive appearance, enhanced by the delicate apricot shade of the walls.

Inside, visitors are welcomed by a spacious foyer where modernity is delicately combined with decorative elegance. Marble, a black-and-white pattern of Italian granite tiles, mirrors, stylized candle-shaped light fixtures and photographs of artists create an atmosphere of creative inspiration.

After the reconstruction, new rehearsal rooms were added, while the corridors and auditorium were renovated. The number of seats was reduced from 340 to 321: the distance between rows and the clearance between the seats and walls were increased for greater comfort and to meet safety requirements. The stage was equipped with modern lighting and sound systems, as well as a large LED screen. Two 3D projectors now make it possible to create various visual compositions on the walls of the hall. Particular attention was paid to acoustics, which took more than a month to fine-tune.

The Poltava Philharmonic remains a vibrant environment where new names, creative ensembles and artistic projects are constantly emerging. The arrival of young performers does not displace tradition; on the contrary, it gives it a new sound. Here, different generations of musicians can work side by side, share their experience and bring their boldest ideas to life.

The Philharmonic’s creative ensembles actively represent the Poltava cultural school far beyond the region. Their work is aimed not only at preserving Ukrainian folklore and academic heritage but also at making this music engaging for contemporary audiences in Ukraine and abroad.

The repertoire of the Poltava Regional Philharmonic covers a wide range of genres, from authentic folklore and academic classics to contemporary creative experiments. One stage can bring together folk songs, chamber music, orchestral programmes and new stage formats.

This creative freedom allows the Philharmonic to remain interesting to listeners of different generations. Here, traditional Ukrainian music retains its vibrant colors.
