Dnipro Academic Theatre of Drama and Comedy – an Institution with a Rich History

The Dnipro Academic Theatre of Drama and Comedy is a cultural centre in the very heart of Dnipro, located on the main street of the regional centre at 97 D. Yavornytskoho Avenue. Built in 1847, the theatre building is now recognized as an architectural monument and is one of the oldest in Dnipro and Ukraine. At the beginning of the 20th century, the institution was called the Winter Theatre, and in 1927 a new period in its history began.

The Dnipro Theatre of Drama and Comedy has been headed by director and artistic director Serhii Mazanyi since 2018. The chief director is Anton Mezhenin. The theatre company’s guiding principle is «to speak to our contemporaries in a contemporary language». The theatre’s repertoire includes performances based on works by Ukrainian and foreign classics, as well as contemporary playwrights. The acting company includes People’s and Honoured Artists of Ukraine, as well as leading stage performers. The theatre’s actors have repeatedly received Grand Prix awards at international and Ukraine-wide festivals and competitions for their outstanding roles. The magnificent theatre hall has 2 stages: the Small Stage and the Main Stage (with 575 seats). Lavish decoration, excellent acoustics and the well-planned arrangement of the audience seats guarantee pleasant emotions, excellent sound and good visibility from every corner of the hall.
