The most striking stages in the history of Ukrainian stand-up: from the origins to the present
Stand-up is a genre of live humor where a comedian takes to the stage to talk about life as it is. Without scenery or scripts, just a stage, a microphone, and a sincere conversation with the audience. Humor is born here and now – in everyday, political, or social topics that the author experiences together with the audience. After the era of television formats and scripted shows, people wanted real emotions again, so stand-up has become that territory of honesty where laughter and truth go hand in hand.Although modern stand-up comedy originated in the United States, its Ukrainian roots go deeper – into folklore. During folk festivals, songs and jokes often alternated with comic monologues and witticisms that ridiculed social realities. This folk humor, free and frank, became the basis for the future genre, which in the modern history of Ukraine grew on the soil of post-Soviet absurdity. Humor in Ukrainian culture has always been a way of resistance – against injustice, censorship and the absurdity of life.
Main periods of development: from the first microphones to a cultural phenomenon
In the 2010s, Ukrainian stand-up comedy began in small bars in Kyiv and Lviv, where enthusiasts tested their jokes in front of friends. At that time, humor still resembled a wild sprout - it sprouted despite the lack of stability of the stage, format and support. Gradually, television projects appeared, such as "The League of Laughter", which accustomed the viewer to the conversational genre, although they remained within the framework of the script. The real breakthrough came with the emergence of independent platforms: YouTube channels, open microphones and festivals, where comedians could speak without censorship. It was then that stand-up ceased to be an "addition to the show" and turned into a separate phenomenon.Kyiv saw a real solo stand-up with the performances of pioneers. Among them are Verka Serdyuchka, Dyadya Zhora, Serhiy Prytula, and Valery Zhidkov. The artists' performances became the first steps towards the modern format of the genre - original, honest, built on their own stories.
In 2012, the project “Mamakhokhotala” was launched, which became the first stand-up show on Ukrainian television. Yevhen Yanovich’s performance “The First. Solo. Funny” on the NLO TV channel opened up a new format of humor for a wide audience. Later, Andriy Shabanov launched “The Great Ukrainian Stand-up” on the New Channel, where stand-up comedians competed for the title of the best. The finalists of the project held a series of performances around the country, establishing the genre as a full-fledged concert format.
The most notable step in the development of the genre was the project "Underground Stand-Up", launched in 2015. The club members turned isolated performances into a systemic movement - with regular shows, a community of stand-up comedians and an audience that grew every year. Within a few years, small clubs could not accommodate everyone, and stand-up became as popular in Kyiv as the performances of music stars. Since then, it has become obvious: stand-up is not just individual performances by artists with selections of their own jokes. It is a huge community that lives and moves in the rhythm of time.

Stand-up in Ukraine today
After 2020, especially during the war, stand-up took on a new meaning – it became a kind of psychotherapy. Comedians joked about blackouts, air raid warnings, life during wartime, and human endurance. Humor became a way to survive, to find the strength to laugh even when you want to be silent. Stand-up in Ukrainian became not just mainstream, but a logical response of artists and the public to Russian aggression.Modern Ukrainian stand-up, as of 2025, covers many areas. The number of women in the genre is increasing. Veteran shows have appeared, where military personnel share their own experiences through irony. The number of performances has tripled over the past five years, and Ukrainian stand-up comedians are collecting millions of views on YouTube.
Today, stand-up is not just entertainment. It is a cultural space where laughter unites and heals. During performances, the line between the stage and the audience disappears: the comedian is not an idol, but a person who lives the same realities as the audience. That is why stand-up in Ukrainian has become not only a mirror of society, but also the voice of the era that laughs through pain.
