Band History
Druha Rika is a Ukrainian rock band whose origins date back to 1995. However, the band officially considers 1996 as its founding year. At that time, the group performed under the name Second River. Its original lineup consisted of student friends Valerii Kharchyshyn, Oleksandr Baranovskyi, and Viktor Skuratovskyi. The musicians held their first rehearsals in an empty classroom at the Faculty of Philology in Zhytomyr. Back then, the band mainly performed songs in English and quickly gained popularity and recognition among female students at the local pedagogical institute.
Valerii Kharchyshyn recalls that one of the biggest challenges in the early days was assembling a permanent lineup. Initially, the band consisted of only three members. Various musicians later joined rehearsals, but none of them stayed for long. Finding a drummer proved especially difficult. At the time, locating a skilled drummer in Zhytomyr was a real challenge. The same musician could be playing in fifteen different bands simultaneously. As a result, talented performers had to be lured away with jokes and bonuses. The band also needed another guitarist, as the young group required at least one true professional capable of confidently carrying guitar parts on stage.
In 1998, several demo recordings found their way to Volodymyr Luchkin, who later became the tour manager of Okean Elzy. He was deeply impressed by what he heard and invited the band to audition for the «Future of Ukraine» festival. He also arranged for them to record demo tracks at a Kyiv studio. This gave the group important tools for reaching a wider audience through professional sound and high-quality promotion. The frontman's charisma also played a significant role in the band's growing popularity. It was during this period that the group finally adopted the name Druha Rika and began preparing for the «Chervona Ruta-1999» festival.
Creative Career
The band moved to Kyiv, where it began actively establishing itself on the national music scene. Over time, the group became an integral part of not only the capital's musical culture but also that of the entire country. Among the first musicians with whom the Zhytomyr artists formed creative connections were the members of the band Skryabin. They supported the young group by helping them with several songs.
At the same time as working on songs for their debut album «I Am», the band also performed at numerous festivals. These appearances provided valuable experience and, at times, an opportunity to earn some money. Their real breakthrough came with winning the «Future of Ukraine» festival in 1999. Druha Rika took first place among more than one hundred participants.
The presentation of the band's first album took place on October 9, 2000, as a live performance at a Kyiv club. Just one week later, on October 16, the record was officially released by Nova Records. The successful debut inspired further creative development. During the same period, the band was recognized as the greatest discovery of the large-scale PROSTO ROCK festival.
The Band's Artistic Development
In April 2001, while simultaneously working on a new album, Druha Rika presented fans with the fresh single «Oksana». The song quickly conquered the charts and became one of the most frequently broadcast tracks on Ukrainian radio stations and television channels. Shortly after its release, the musicians returned to the studio, where work on the next album was already in full swing. The record was produced at the studio of successful producer and renowned composer Yevhen Stupka. About a month later, the band was shortlisted for the «Golden Firebird» award in the «Discovery of the Year» category.
Following lengthy studio sessions, fans heard another new release at the beginning of 2002 – the song «Mathematics». At that time, the members of Druha Rika were heavily inspired by the British band Manic Street Preachers. The band's leader, Valerii Kharchyshyn, wanted to create something with an atmosphere similar to the guitar solo from the song Ocean Spray. The single was accompanied by a music video directed by Andrii Toloshnyi.
In March 2003, the band signed a contract with the leading Ukrainian record label Lavina Music. That summer, Druha Rika had the honor of opening the Kyiv concert of Depeche Mode frontman Dave Gahan. From then on, the Ukrainian rock band embarked on extensive tours across Ukraine and abroad, released new albums and music videos, collaborated with other music stars, performed at major festivals, and won the hearts of millions of fans.

During Ukraine's Revolution of Dignity, the band's songs became a true soundtrack of the struggle. The composition «Here Today, With Me Tomorrow» became a symbol of resistance and inner resilience.
In May 2015, Druha Rika performed on the stage of the National Opera of Ukraine together with the National Academic Orchestra of Folk Instruments (NAONI), presenting a special concert program. The combination of live rock music with the Ukrainian academic tradition created a unique atmosphere. The musicians donated 100,000 hryvnias to support the treatment of people injured in the Anti-Terrorist Operation (ATO) zone, continuing their active charitable work in support of those in need.
When Russia launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine, the musicians did not remain on the sidelines. Druha Rika held a charity acoustic concert in Kyiv under the symbolic title «Another River». In addition, the band performed the «Mariupol» program in their hometown of Zhytomyr before embarking on the «Who If Not Us?» mini-tour across the Baltic countries, the Czech Republic, and Poland. All of these performances shared one goal – raising funds to support people affected by the war and assist Ukrainian defenders.
The musicians have repeatedly performed for wounded soldiers in hospitals and rehabilitation centers. They have organized intimate concerts to raise donations for the Armed Forces of Ukraine. The band's connection with the country's defenders is also deeply personal, as the son of lead singer Valerii Kharchyshyn serves in the ranks of the Ukrainian military.

- At the beginning of their career, the musicians' main goal was not awards or trophies but real earnings. Every penny they made was invested in musical equipment. For some time, Viktor Skuratovskyi had to play a broken guitar with only three strings remaining. Only later was he able to afford a proper instrument.
