Khmelnytskyi Regional Philharmonic: History and Location
The Regional Philharmonic in Khmelnytskyi is an important center of the cultural and artistic life of the city and the region. The Philharmonic was founded in 1938 in Kamianets-Podilskyi - the then administrative center of the modern Khmelnytskyi region - as one of the key regional cultural institutions. Its task at that time was to popularize musical art and other forms of creativity, including dance, artistic reading and performing skills.During World War II, the Philharmonic's activities were temporarily suspended, and only in 1945 did the institution resume work in the new regional center - Proskurov (modern Khmelnytskyi). At first, the institution was located in the premises of the former Oaza cinema, and in 1982 it moved to a new, spacious premises. Previously, in the 19th century, the site of this building was a huge wasteland known as the Horse Square, where horses and carts, carriages and various equipment were sold during fairs.
In 1960, the construction of an outstanding building with a hall for 750 seats for the Petrovsky Musical and Drama Theater was completed on the square. The theater was located here for more than two decades, and after its relocation in 1982, the building was transferred to the disposal of the regional philharmonic society.
The Khmelnytsky Regional Philharmonic Society is located in the very center of the city at 7 Heroes of Mariupol Street. There are many interesting places for walks and cultural recreation around it - parks, squares, monuments to Ukrainian figures and historical buildings.
