Lviv Opera House: History

The Lviv National Academic Opera and Ballet Theatre named after Solomiia Krushelnytska is one of the cultural landmarks of the city of Lviv, and for more than a century it has remained a true attraction for admirers of drama, ballet, music, and other forms of art. According to historical sources, in 1885 the Lviv city authorities, together with local residents, raised around one million gold pieces to build the theatre, and construction officially began as early as 1886.

Located in the very heart of the city, the Lviv Opera House opened its doors to audiences on October 4, 1900, with the premiere of the dramatic opera «Janek» by Władysław Żeleński. World-famous performers and ballet masters have appeared on the theatre's stage, thousands of diverse performances have been held here, and the variety of genres represented in its repertoire has long been impressive.

Today, the opera house employs more than 40 soloists, a ballet and choir company of 120 artists, and a symphony orchestra of 90 musicians. The theatre's repertoire includes 3 operettas, 22 operas, and 20 ballets. All performances are presented in their original language.
