Ternopil Regional Philharmonic: The Heart of the City's Musical Life

The great Les Kurbas took his first creative steps here. Ivan Franko and Solomiya Krushelnytska performed in the Philharmonic building. Today, the Ternopil Regional Philharmonic impresses its guests with an incredible variety of musical programs across different genres and formats.

History and Present Day

The Ternopil Philharmonic occupies a historic building – the «Mishchanske Brotherhood» House at 11 Kniazia Ostrozkoho Street. Before the Ternopil Regional Philharmonic was founded in 1939, creative gatherings and concerts were held here, and the «Ternopil Theatrical Evenings» theatre company was active. At the end of the 20th century, a string quartet was established at the cultural institution. At various times, the M. Voroniak Choir, the «Dnister» and «Zbruch» vocal and instrumental ensembles, and a symphonic jazz orchestra conducted by V. Semchyshyn performed here. Stars of contemporary Ukrainian pop music, including Viktor Pavlik, Oksana Pekun, Oksana Mukha, and many others, have taken to the Philharmonic stage.

Today, the Philharmonic is constantly moving forward and embracing new ideas. The team's bold approach is reflected not only in its artistic work but also in the institution's visual identity. On August 17, 2026, the opening of the new concert season was marked by the unveiling of the cultural institution's updated logo. The Philharmonic's administration noted that this step was not merely a change of image, but the beginning of a transformation in its approach to work and a move toward modernization while preserving respect for its history and traditions. The Philharmonic's new image is distinctive, contemporary, and concise. And this is only the beginning of the changes.

Architecture, Engineering Features, and Auditorium Capacity

Architecturally, the Ternopil Philharmonic building is a classic example of public architecture characteristic of Galicia in the early 20th century. The institution is a historical and cultural landmark of Ukraine, with elements of Classicism and Eclecticism preserved in its style. The facade features arched windows, while the interior includes a grand staircase, historic stucco work, and authentic decorative details.

The main concert hall has 400 seats. The Philharmonic also has a smaller rehearsal hall and rooms where performers can practice.

The high ceilings and distinctive geometry of the walls provide excellent natural acoustics. The even distribution of sound does not require powerful amplification.

The Philharmonic's Ensembles

Today, more than 150 artists work at the institution, including vocalists, musicians, and dancers. Many have received awards at international and Ukraine-wide levels. The ensembles representing the Ternopil Philharmonic include:
  • the «Nadzbruchanka» Academic Dance Ensemble (director Yuliia Yakymchuk);
  • the «Vizerunok» Academic Folk Music Ensemble (director Myroslav Babchuk);
  • the «Solovyi Halychyny» Vocal Trio (director Bohdan Ivanonkiv);
  • the «Brevis» Academic Chamber Choir (director Sviatoslav Dunets);
  • the Academic Symphony Orchestra (director Myroslav Kril);
  • the «Continuo» Chamber Orchestra (director Kyrylo Semenchenko), and others.
In the summer of 2026, Andrii Arkusha became acting head of the Ternopil Regional Philharmonic.
