Loyalty to oneself and one’s country versus the illusion of prestige
The play is set in Kharkiv during the turbulent era of Ukrainization. We meet Mina Mazailo, who is convinced that all his failures in life are due to his “unpopular” Ukrainian surname. That is why he decides to radically change the situation: he hires a teacher of “correct” (Russian) pronunciation and dreams of transforming himself into the respectable Mazenin. But instead of a peaceful new life, a real struggle begins within the family. His son Mokiy resolutely opposes his father and defends the Ukrainian language and his own identity. His wife tries to prevent a catastrophe, while in the meantime, the formidable Aunt Motya is already rushing from Kursk to save her relatives from “dangerous” Ukrainization.
