The evolution of Ukrainian record labels – from large companies to a sprawling ecosystem of experimental studios

A record label is a brand, trademark, or company that produces, distributes, promotes, and finances audio and video recordings, as well as finding and supporting new musical talent. The word "label" comes from the round label in the center of a vinyl record, on which information about the record's producer was printed.

The role of recording studios in Ukraine is constantly changing. In the late 90s, a music label could take on virtually all the work surrounding an artist – from management to songwriting by songwriters.

Today, most Ukrainian studios are hybrid in nature - they assume only part of the obligations in working with an artist: distribution, partial management, or sponsorship of new songs and videos.

You've probably heard of the large-scale label Moon Records or Iryna Horova's young but promising label Pomitni. So let's learn more about the industry representatives.

The era of the "majors"

By 2022, a core of major players had formed in the family of Ukrainian labels, which had not changed much over the years. Most of them have roots in the past and became noticeable back in the 2000s. Among the major players on the market:
  • Moon Records is one of the oldest Ukrainian labels specializing in various genres, including pop music, rock, electronica, and others. The label was founded in 1997 by producer Andriy Pasichnyk. The company quickly became the main publisher of licensed products in Ukraine. In the early years of its operation, Moon Records Ukraine specialized in the release of alternative and non-format music, including "gangsta" rap and heavy metal. Having gained leadership in its direction, the Moon Records label began to expand the stylistic boundaries of releases and actively work in various genres of the modern commercial and informal music industry. Currently, the distribution catalog of Moon Records Ukraine includes over five thousand albums. The studio has recorded such artists as Okean Elzy, Jamala, TNMK, Boombox, Natalia Mogilevska, Druga Rika, Green Grey, Tartak, Motor'rolla, The Maneken, Tomato Jaws, and others;
  • Lavina Music is a music holding that works in the direction of Ukrainian hip-hop and rap and promotes the development of these genres in the country. The label was founded in 2001. Over the entire period of its existence, the label's catalog has more than 25,000 audio and video tracks on an exclusive basis, including from performers who have won "gold" and "platinum" discs. Among the artists of the music label are Okean Elzy, Druga Rika, Tina Karol, SKY, SKRYABIN, Gaitana and others.

The emergence of indie labels

With the beginning of the 2000s and the spread of the Internet, the idea of physical media began to recede into the background. This caused a crisis in the traditional model of music labels. But at the same time, it opened up new opportunities for independent artists and indie labels. The main functions shifted from physical distribution to rights management, digital marketing and concert organization.

Lowering barriers to entry into the industry thanks to digital distribution platforms (YouTube, streaming services) has allowed for the emergence of a large number of independent (indie) labels, which often focus on specific niche genres, experimental music, and have closer relationships with artists. Ukrainian indie labels include:
  • Vidlik Records. The company was founded in early 2016 by Ukrainian singer Nata Zhyzhchenko (ONUKA) and her husband Yevgen Filatov (The Maneken). The studio specializes in alternative and experimental music and supports young independent artists (The Elephant, Jerry Heil);
  • Enjoy!Records is an indie label founded in 2014 by Igor Tarnopolsky in Kyiv, with whom Jamala, Pur:Pur, Bahroma, Vivienne Mort, Brunettes Shoot Blondes have collaborated;
  • Aby Sho Music. The label was founded in 2015 and specializes in new Ukrainian music, rare archival collections and reissues on vinyl records. Aby Sho Music has collaborated with Onuka, Boombox, Vivienne Mort, Okean Elzy;
  • WATRA is a 2019 label created by Kostya Pochtar, frontman of the band 5 Vymir and the Postman project, and Andriy Boyar, director and music video maker. Its goal is to support single musicians;
  • Bitanga Blood is a 2020 label founded by singer Alina Pash and manager Andriy Inozemtsev. The project focuses on Ukrainian hip-hop (OTOY, XXV Kadr, Tatko Lynx);
  • Dnipropop is a label that emerged around the iconic Dnipro club "Modul", run by Yevhen Goncharov and Mykyta Kozachinsky. The project is focused on releasing music on vinyl.

The largest recording studios in 2025

In 2025, among the most significant music labels, independent companies stand out to some extent, in particular Pomitni (collaborates with Dorofeeva, OTOY, Nikow, Nazva), ENKO music (Kola, Yaktak, alyona alyona, MamaRika), as well as Kontrabass Promo (Pyrig and Batig, The Unsleeping). These companies have been operating for no more than five years. And their artists sing exclusively in Ukrainian. As of 2024, Kontrabass Promo had 26 artists in distribution, Pomitni - 20, and ENKO - over 80. These data are official, although there are still artists with whom the labels work privately.

Among the important criteria for selecting artists, producers and studio founders name:
  • talent and hard work;
  • innovation and uniqueness;
  • technical quality of the material;
  • activity in social networks;
  • streaming listening figures and other factors.
You can learn more about the artists with whom modern Ukrainian labels collaborate (the “heavyweight” Moon Records or the promising ENKO) by selecting the artist’s page on Concert.ua. The site also always has an up-to-date concert poster with a detailed description of the event program. Finally, don’t forget about the main step: booking and paying for tickets. We recommend doing this in advance, while tickets are available at an affordable price and the insidious sell-out hasn’t crept up.
