Andriy Pilat is a Ukrainian abstract artist, stand-up artist, co-founder of the Free Stand-up club, and participant in sports marathons. The artist from Cherkasy became a real star of the BBC Ukraine story back in 2019 and has since acquired the status of an influential opinion leader.
Artistic work
Andriy’s talent for visual art was passed down from his father and grandfather, who were also artists. Pilat has been drawing since childhood. And when he joined the Underfloor hip-hop community in his youth, he began to actively develop in the direction of graffiti. Andriy Pilat and his unusual art style instantly became famous with the release of a BBC NEWS Ukraine report in 2019. However, the artist began creating paintings from garbage two years earlier.
Andriy Pilat's biography breaks stereotypes about the path to art. He is a food engineer by education. Andriy Pilat himself has repeatedly admitted that the impetus for creativity was a meeting with people who supported him at the right moment and helped him believe in his own potential. And it was then that the future author chose an unconventional path.
A unique artistic approach
For the artist from Chernivtsi, garbage is not waste, but a new form of paint. You can often hear that Andriy Pilat fights for ecology, but he explains his activities differently: it is not an ecological performance, but a way to see material where others see waste. Andriy Pilat says that he comes to the garbage dump as if it were home. After all, it is there that the colors for the future canvas are born. Plastic, which most people throw away, is transformed into painting, abstraction and a bold experiment in the spirit of abstractionism in the hands of the artist.
At first, Andriy's relatives did not understand him - a garage filled with waste, strange smells of melted plastic, hours of searching for the right shade... Some of his acquaintances even turned their backs on the guy. But when Andriy Pilat began holding exhibitions and his paintings found buyers, skepticism disappeared.
Features of the artist's paintings
Today, to create a work, an artist sometimes spends two weeks, or even two months, collecting the right colors. He literally collects shades before starting the process. Creativity for Pilat is a dialogue. The space of the painting is always open so that the viewer can become a co-creator. Andriy Pilat is convinced that the canvas and the imagination of the viewer create a plot together. There are no ready-made schemes in his art - only improvisation, the living energy of the moment. Andriy Pilat himself emphasizes that you can create from anything if you learn to see.
The first popularity came through Instagram - social networks have become a kind of online gallery. In two years, the Chernivtsi resident created about thirty works - and all of them were sold! In November 2018, Andriy Pilat opened the Homo plasticus exhibition in Chernivtsi, and a month later he presented the third series of works. Later, the exhibition and the artist's paintings were exhibited in Kyiv, Lviv, Ivano-Frankivsk, Ternopil, Khmelnytsky. Some of the paintings ended up in Germany.
Andriy Pilat's style was influenced by Jean-Michel Basquiat, Paul Gauguin and Wassily Kandinsky. And although comparisons with Basquiat are often made, Andriy Pilat himself retains his own voice - bold, provocative, honest. His art is not just painting, but a position. A complete rejection of harmful consumption, the recycling art technique and a clear gesture against excess and consumerism.
Among the artist's famous paintings are the following works:
- "Katya";
- "Number 1";
- "Number 2" and many others.
The path to stand-up comedy
The story of Pilat the comedian is simple - he took the microphone, went on stage and started speaking. This is how Andriy Pilat began his journey in stand-up. The first performances took place at "open microphones". Later, Andriy Pilat became the co-founder and ideological leader of the "Free Stand-up" club in Chernivtsi, which significantly influenced the local scene.
The active phase of his career started in 2019 - since then, Andriy Pilat has been appearing more and more often in comedy projects: STAND UP Battle Club, “Would You Be Surprised?” Show, Standup UA, “Show Po Punchu” and others. His stage image is built on self-irony - in particular, regarding his own stuttering. Andriy Pilat does not avoid uncomfortable topics, but on the contrary - turns them into a tool of humor.
As a comedian, Andriy Pilat works with personal stories, turning them into honest and witty monologues. His stand-up is a combination of intellectual humor and life confession.
Popular solo programs and acts of the comedian:
- “The Word Catcher”;
- “Laughter Through the Darkness”;
- “Life Among Drug Addicts”;
- “Excuses During War” and others.
Tandem of Art and Humor
In stand-up, Andriy Pilat often jokes about his own experience of “scraping in the trash”. In monologues, Andriy Pilat ironically mocks the public reaction to his process of finding material.
A significant part of the humor that Andriy Pilat creates is dedicated to the theme of a poor artist, survival and the constant search for himself. He transforms failures intocenochical material. And this is where Andriy Pilat combines two hypostases - an artist and a comedian.
His humor is an effective way to comprehend reality, see the absurdity of modernity and at the same time remain honest with himself. And this is the whole essence of who Andriy Pilat is today: an artist who feels equally confident both at the canvas and on the stage.
Publicity
Andriy Pilat is extremely active in the public space. He travels around Ukraine with lectures, shares his experience and talks about art as a way of thinking. In addition, Andriy Pilat worked for a long time as the art director of the West Camp children's camp in the Carpathians. His goal was to support children who want to draw, but are afraid to take the first step.
After the interview on the BBC, Andriy Pilat received dozens of messages from people who were inspired by his story. Andriy Pilat himself emphasizes that everything depends on work. The artist is convinced: inspiration is worthless without perseverance.
Charity plays an important role in the life of a famous Ukrainian. On November 13, 2025, Andriy Pilat set off on a hiking trip along the Bystrica-Solotvinska and Dniester rivers. Over 350 km of the route, collecting garbage, creating paintings just along the way - and selling works to support the Ukrainian military. It was both a performance and a demonstration of a clear civic position.
Influence on modern Ukrainian culture and art
Andriy Pilat is an example of a comedian who goes far beyond the usual "tales from the stage". His stuttering is not a flaw, but a recognizable feature that adds a special rhythm and charm to his performances.
The artist proved by his own example that it is possible to be a talented artist (find plastic in garbage cans and turn it into paintings) and at the same time gather full halls and accurately hit the heart with a joke.
Andriy made stand-up honest, close and truly "his". His story is proof that culture is born not only in large metropolises, but also in cities like Chernivtsi. And this culture is able to give a smile, encourage reflection and, ultimately, accept ourselves as we are.
