Stas Korolov is a Ukrainian musician and multi-instrumentalist. He began his career on the national stage as a member of the band Yuko. In 2021, he launched his solo project and immediately earned a reputation as one of the most inventive contemporary Ukrainian musicians. His catalog includes a track consisting of a single word, a composition built from Ukrainians' search engine queries, and a song telling the story of losing an eye at a young age.

The artist's early years

Stas Korolov was born and raised in Avdiivka, Donetsk region, where his musical journey began and where he developed the ambition to dedicate his life to the stage. However, in the industrial city where he grew up, music was long regarded merely as a hobby rather than a serious profession. As the artist himself recalled, even his music school teachers discouraged him from enrolling in a music college because they did not believe that being a musician could become a viable career.

Stas gained his first concert experience as a teenager. In 2007, at the age of seventeen, he joined the local band Kazus Belli, where, as he later described it, he was a "cabin boy" among older and far more experienced musicians. It was there that the future singer first picked up an electric guitar and began mastering his craft.

Over time, the band became a genuine local sensation. The musicians filled local cafés, held sold-out solo concerts, and effectively revived young people's interest in rock music in Avdiivka. According to Korolov, after the band's success, more and more school students started forming their own groups, although attitudes toward the music industry remained unchanged—creativity was still viewed as a hobby rather than a real profession.

The artist's biography also includes a tragic episode. In December 2000, when Stas was eleven years old, he lost an eye after a firecracker exploded inside a plastic pen. Despite several surgeries, doctors were unable to save his eyesight, and the eye was eventually replaced with a prosthesis.

Education

From 2001 to 2005, the future performer completed the guitar program at music school as an external student. Later, between 2005 and 2009, he also completed the piano program externally. At the same time, from 2006 to 2011, he studied at the Faculty of Information Technologies and Automation of Donetsk National Technical University.

First creative steps

In 2010, Korolov founded the acoustic project THE?BRA, which later evolved into the indie band Widiwava. There, Stas served as songwriter, frontman, and guitarist. In 2011, the band released its debut EP Widwiava Beta, followed in 2013 by the EP How I Learned To Stop Worrying And Love 5/4 and the full-length album Null. After the album's release, the band embarked on a concert tour. Music critics described Widiwava's style as an unconventional blend of pop music, indie, art rock, and experimental sound.

After the musicians relocated first to Kharkiv and later to Kyiv, the story of Widiwava came to an end.

Participation in «The Voice of the Country» and the band Yuko

A new chapter of Korolov's career began in 2016, when he became a contestant on the television show «The Voice of the Country». There he met folklorist Yuliia Yurina. Their mentor recognized the creative potential of the two musicians, leading to the creation of the electro-folk project Yuko. The duo quickly gained recognition among fans of Ukrainian alternative music and became residents of the Masterskaya label. In 2017 and 2018, the project released two successful albums, performed at major European festivals, and reached the final of Ukraine's national selection for Eurovision 2019.

Within the project, Korolov was responsible for the instrumental arrangements and electronic production. At the end of 2020, the creative paths of the Yuko members diverged.

Solo career

In 2021, Stas Korolov officially launched his solo career by releasing the debut album «O_x», created together with director Anastasiia Vesna. The release received exceptionally high praise from critics, who repeatedly described it as one of the best albums of the year and one of the strongest conceptual music projects in the history of independent Ukraine.

On February 22, 2022, the artist released an unusual one-hour version of the composition Rage, which continued the artistic ideas introduced on his debut album.

On April 13, 2024, the musician expanded his discography with his second album, «Round 2: Digital Fugitive». The record was performed live together with a jazz-rock ensemble, while Stas completed the final sound production himself. Funding for the release was provided by the musician's audience, who supported the project. The album is almost entirely instrumental, with lyrics intentionally reduced to a minimum in favor of atmosphere, improvisation, and sonic exploration.

The "seasonal" concept of creativity

One of the most original features of Stas Korolov's artistic vision is his unique concept of dividing his career into separate "seasons." Instead of releasing conventional singles or albums, the artist creates large-scale artistic cycles in which the musical style, concert program, and even the logic of audience interaction change each time:

the first season is connected with the conceptual album «O_x». It was the artist's most personal and performative stage, dedicated to psychological trauma, childhood, and inner experiences. Live performances became experimental improvisational performances;
the second season is represented by the project Stas Korolov 2 and the album «Round 2: Digital Fugitive». It emerged after the beginning of the full-scale war. The musician abandoned material from his debut album, formed a new jazz-rock ensemble, and shifted the focus from personal stories to the collective experience of a society learning to live in a new reality;
the third season is titled «Everyday Rap». It was created together with director and VJ Anastasiia Vesna. Here, the artist returns to theatrical performance, while rap becomes merely an artistic tool for telling a new story;
the fourth season has already been announced by the musician as the next major artistic cycle that will open a new chapter in his career.

Musical style and lyrical themes

Stas Korolov's style is difficult to define within the boundaries of a single genre. His music emerges at the intersection of indie rock, jazz, electronic music, experimental sound, and theatrical art. Instead of following traditional song structures, the artist creates multilayered compositions in which instrumental improvisations unexpectedly transition into spoken-word passages.

An inseparable part of Korolov's concerts is the combination of music with video art, lighting design, and theatrical performance. Synthesizers, unconventional rhythmic structures, bold sound effects, and constant experimentation make every release unpredictable. At the same time, each new season completely reimagines the musician's style—from minimalist electronics to energetic rock-driven arrangements.

The themes of his work are equally significant. In his early compositions, Korolov openly addressed psychological trauma, impostor syndrome, toxic relationships, and childhood in industrial Avdiivka. Later, his songs increasingly turned toward the collective experience of war, adaptation to a new reality, information overload, mental health, and social transformation. Irony, everyday imagery, and uncompromising honesty became defining features of his songwriting. As a result, Stas Korolov's music often feels unusual—even eccentric—yet it almost always leaves listeners with a powerful emotional impression.

Social activity

Stas Korolov's project has become one of the most successful examples of artist-audience interaction through the Patreon platform. At the same time, the musician's civic engagement has long been an inseparable part of his work. Since the beginning of the full-scale invasion, the singer has consistently supported the Armed Forces of Ukraine and volunteer initiatives, using concerts and his public platform to organize large-scale charity fundraisers.

One of the most notable initiatives was the performance «The Endless Concert», held at Squat 17b. Together with his band, Stas continuously performed an instrumental version of one of his own compositions while invited artists joined the performance one after another. The event continued until one million hryvnias had been raised. All proceeds were donated to the Hospitallers Medical Battalion to purchase 50 sets of winter tires for evacuation vehicles.

The musician also regularly participates in other charitable initiatives. As part of the #NaShapku campaign, together with the Yevhenii Dubovyk Project and the «SVOI» Charitable Foundation, Korolov helped raise funds for bone implants for wounded Ukrainian defenders.
