The «Dzerkalo» Theatre in Kyiv closed its 35th season in the summer of 2023. Back then, in the early 1980s, the emergence of a creative group made up of Kyiv youth became a manifestation of the capital’s avant-garde and a response from artists hungry for free art to the restrictions of the totalitarian regime. Director and artistic director of the theatre throughout its entire existence has been director Volodymyr Petraniuk, who describes himself as follows: «I am a bright man and a hooligan, a romantic and a Don Juan, a playwright and a poet.» Unconventional, right? The theatre is the only institution in Kyiv on the left bank of the Dnipro whose repertoire is exclusively in Ukrainian and consists of works of various genres by Ukrainian authors, both classics and contemporaries: Mykola Hohol, Ivan Karpenko-Karyi, Lesia Ukrainka, Taras Shevchenko, Borys Humeniuk, Volodymyr Petraniuk and others.
