The Lesia Ukrainka National Academic Drama Theatre
A Theatre That Has Gained Wide Popularity and the Sincere Love of Its Audience
The Lesia Ukrainka National Academic Drama Theatre is located in the very heart of the historic part of Kyiv at 5 Bohdana Khmelnytskoho Street. The institution was founded in 1891. At the time, the theatre building was known to Kyiv residents as the «Bergonie House». The preparation of performances was initiated by the talented actor and director Mykola Solovtsov. The capital's temple of Melpomene was named after the renowned Ukrainian poet in 1941, following the acclaimed and remarkably successful production of Lesia Ukrainka's play «The Stone Host».
In December 2022, the theatre company was headed by Kyrylo Hryhorovych Kashlikov.
Today, performances at the Lesia Ukrainka Theatre are staged on three stages:
- Main Stage (750 seats);
- New Stage (136 seats);
- Stage Under the Roof (65 seats).
Repertoire of the Lesia Ukrainka Theatre
The theatre's schedule is always so diverse that every audience member can find a performance to their taste. The three stages host:
- performances based on works by world classics (Shakespeare, Wilde, Anouilh, Miller);
- plays by contemporary playwrights (Stevens, McDonagh, Mitani);
- works by Ukrainian classics (Lesia Ukrainka, Dovzhenko, Franko).
The theatre employs some of the finest directors and actors. Leading roles in its performances have been played by Ada Rogovtseva, Yevhen Papernyi, Anatolii Khostikoiev, Liubov Kubiuk, and other stars of Ukrainian theatre and cinema.
In addition to performances, visitors can attend symphonic music concerts, performances by stars of the music scene, and various creative evenings. The auditorium is equipped with modern lighting and sound systems, allowing events of various formats to be organized and creating a sense of complete immersion for the audience.

If an air raid alert sounds before the beginning of the event, visitors must leave the theatre premises, and administrators will direct the audience to the nearest shelter (Teatralna metro station). If the alert is short, the performance will begin 20 minutes after it ends. If an air raid alert occurs during the event, the performance will be stopped, and theatre staff will escort the audience out of the theatre building - the Teatralna metro station is located next to the theatre. If the alert lasts no longer than 40 minutes, the performance may continue after the alert ends.
