Kyiv Operetta Theatre: history, location
The Kyiv National Academic Operetta Theatre has a long history. Its origins can be traced back to 1901, when the construction of a new capital building – the Trinity People's House – began according to the design of the prominent architect Hennadii Antonovskyi. Since then, various creative teams have worked within the theatre's walls.
In 1967, it was renamed the National Operetta. And on May 14, 2021, the long-awaited opening of the newly reconstructed main hall was announced. The event marked a step toward a new future and a new chapter in the history of the Kyiv Operetta. During the reconstruction, the bold ideas of leading Kyiv architects and engineers were implemented. They were reflected in the stylistic diversity of the hall's design.
Today, the modernized venue presents itself as a Theatre of Performing Arts and invites everyone to engage with high art and enrich their inner world. The theatre is located at 53/3 Velyka Vasylkivska Street.
Repertoire of the Kyiv Operetta
For the Kyiv Operetta Theatre, 2021 was marked by renewal not only of its structure but also of its repertoire. This was demonstrated by the acclaimed premiere of the musical «Dorian Gray». For the first time in Ukraine, the theatre presented a work based on Oscar Wilde's novel in the form of a musical. Dynamic, spectacular and extravagant, the production delighted audiences and became a real attraction for theatre-goers in the capital.
The repertoire of the Kyiv Operetta caters to audiences of all ages and tastes. The theatre's programme features:
- musicals and operettas based on stories by Ukrainian and international authors («Marusia Churai», «Die Fledermaus», «Chasing Two Hares», «Dorian Gray»);
- children's plays and musical fairy tales, quests («The Bremen Town Musicians», an educational and entertaining quest as part of the «Weekend with the Operetta» project);
- seasonal gala concerts;
- international music festivals and much more.
The theatre employs talented actors and directors who are not afraid to experiment and pleasantly surprise audiences with both new productions and a contemporary approach to classical works. Since 2003, the position of general director and artistic director of the theatre has been held by People's Artist of Ukraine Bohdan Strutynskyi.
