We know today what a siren sounds like, how painful separation is. We know what evacuation is like, what it is like to survive. How important it is to speak up when it seems that everything has already been said. Donetsk Theater (Mariupol) — #THEATREwithoutROOF — presents one of the most powerful stories of the 20th century. Erich Maria Remarque "Night in Lisbon."
Under the stars of the Atlantic, a powerful story of love that knows no borders resounds. Just one night — and a lifetime. Two refugees torn apart by war meet in Lisbon on the eve of their escape to America. This is not just an escape from war-torn Europe. He — with a lost past, She — with a ghostly future. Their conversation is a confession, a farewell, a hope. Together they go through loss, persecution and fear, trying to remain human in inhuman conditions. This is about a journey that has no guarantee of return. The night does not last long, but it is enough to live a whole life.
Directed by Yuriy Odynoky, with Volodymyr Goryansky in the lead role, the play turns into a theatrical document of our time. It is a hymn to dignity, inner freedom, and memory.
A story that resonates today more than ever, echoing the pain of modern Ukraine.
A big night is ahead. And Lisbon will be closer than you think. It will be deep. It will be honest. It will be Remarque. "A Night in Lisbon."
The theater's artistic director is Honored Artist of Ukraine Gennady Dybovsky.
