In 1998, Vitalii Kino (a graduate of Eduard Mytnytskyi's «directing school») and a team of like-minded people founded the Center of Arts «New Ukrainian Theater», which currently operates two theaters: the «Theater on Mykhailivska» and the children's theater «Sonechko».

For many years, the theater did not have its own stage and performed at various venues. In 2009, the Center of Arts finally opened its own stage in Kyiv, in a cozy 19th-century building at 24 Zh Mykhailivska Street.

The theater hall has 40 seats (the administrator arranges the seating for the audience). The theater has an almost home-like, family atmosphere.

The first premiere on its own stage was the play «The Unfortunate Woman» based on the work of I. K. Karpenko-Karyi, which truly became the theater's «programmatic» production. It confidently articulated the aesthetic and philosophical views of the creative team, its artistic direction, and its vision of contemporary Ukrainian theater. It was a sincere, new, «living» interpretation of a well-known classic. This was followed by successful premieres based on works by Chekhov, Shakespeare, Myrnyi, Zweig, Kropyvnytskyi, Williams, and Cocteau. However, the theater did not stop at «revitalizing» classics. The repertoire of the Theater on Mykhailivska includes many new names. Plays by contemporary playwrights N. Uvarov, R. Horbik, N. Khalezin, V. Ribachuk, O. Zverlina, B. Srbljanović, M. Smilianets, and Yu. Vasiuk, as well as stage adaptations of works by T. Malyarchuk, were staged for the first time in Ukraine specifically on the stage of the Theater on Mykhailivska.

From the very first days of its existence, the theater has positioned itself as a theater for the whole family and continues to confidently occupy the theatrical niche of «family» leisure.
