Kyiv Mozart Orchestra is an independent chamber ensemble created by MARKO CONCERT. Each of its members is a true professional and an acclaimed soloist. History of the Orchestra
The history of Kyiv Mozart Orchestra began in 2019, when the idea emerged to present the academic concert format in a new way. The concept was to preserve the standards of a highly professional musical school while at the same time moving away from the excessive solemnity and distance with which classical concerts had long been associated. The initiative to create the new ensemble came from the Ukrainian concert agency MARKO CONCERT, founded by Marko Petrenko.
The goal was to create not simply another orchestra, but a modern cultural brand – stylish, open to dialogue, and accessible to an audience that wants to listen to classical music without unnecessary formality. As a result, an ensemble emerged that transformed the audience’s perception of concert formats.
Orchestra Members
The foundation of Kyiv Mozart Orchestra was formed by leading musicians from the renowned chamber ensemble «Kyiv Soloists». The members of the new orchestra already had extensive professional experience. They had performed as soloists, worked as part of chamber ensembles, participated in international festivals, and toured abroad.
Their performance geography included Germany, Austria, Belgium, Switzerland, Italy, Türkiye, Morocco, China, and other countries. The knowledge gained during these trips, along with stage experience, skills, and their own creative work, was brought by the musicians into the new project.
Creative Career
Just a few months after its founding, Kyiv Mozart Orchestra had the opportunity to introduce itself on a major European stage. The ensemble began a creative collaboration with renowned Dutch conductor Raymond Janssen, with whom it presented a large-scale Christmas project.
For its debut, the orchestra chose not simply a prestigious venue but the legendary Concertgebouw in Amsterdam, one of Europe’s most renowned concert halls. Such a start immediately demonstrated the professional level of the new Ukrainian orchestra, while the success of the performance in the Netherlands helped Kyiv Mozart Orchestra quickly establish a reputation as a unique ensemble.
After returning to Ukraine, the musicians continued developing their own concert concept. The orchestra became a resident ensemble for atmospheric musical evenings by MARKO CONCERT, with the elegant hall of the Fairmont Grand Hotel in Kyiv becoming one of the main venues for such events.
Repertoire
A distinctive feature of the ensemble is its recognisable series of programmes in which the classical musical tradition meets contemporary compositions. These projects include programmes combining the music of Antonio Vivaldi and Max Richter. The concerts gradually became sold-out events and a convincing example that academic music can be relevant, fashionable, and interesting to the modern listener.
Alongside works by Mozart, Vivaldi, and Piazzolla, the programmes feature compositions by Hans Zimmer, as well as hits by Queen, Coldplay, and Imagine Dragons. Thus, different musical eras, styles, and aesthetics can meet in a single concert space – from Baroque classics to contemporary cinematic sound and global pop and rock music.
Christmas programmes hold a special place in the orchestra’s repertoire. The orchestra presents them in an emotional and vibrant way, but without excessive theatricality. Kyiv Mozart Orchestra’s performances are distinguished by a combination of temperament and inner restraint, with the music sounding emotionally rich while retaining its sense of harmony.
It is precisely this balance between high performance discipline and direct contact with the audience that has become one of the ensemble’s defining characteristics. Kyiv Mozart Orchestra relies on technical precision while retaining the feeling of a live concert, where the musicians naturally interact with the audience.
Arrangement Features
Kyiv Mozart Orchestra performs musical material that goes beyond the classical repertoire in its own arrangements. This allows the chamber ensemble to work with compositions originally created for large stages, rock bands, and large-scale symphonic ensembles.
The musicians take well-known stadium hits and rock anthems and adapt them to the chamber orchestra format, which is based primarily on strings and solo instruments. As a result, the music of Queen, Michael Jackson, Coldplay, and Imagine Dragons acquires a completely different texture. Powerful guitar riffs, percussion, and complex vocal parts are transformed into virtuosic violin passages, rich cello lines, and delicately constructed harmonies.
The orchestra also works with soundtracks, including works by Hans Zimmer and John Williams. In such cases, the arrangements are designed to compensate for the absence of a large-scale symphonic ensemble and a substantial electronic component. Instead of literally copying the music, the musicians look for another way to convey the compositions’ dramaturgy – through solo parts and contrasting dynamic transitions.
Original Techniques
In pop and rock programmes, including Sting tributes, the arrangers may deliberately alter the original energy of a composition. The overall tempo is slowed down, while the focus shifts towards sensuality and emotion.
It is also important that the musicians of Kyiv Mozart Orchestra have experience performing both authentic Baroque music and works of contemporary minimalism. This is why their arrangements often balance between these two worlds, combining an academic approach with contemporary methods of presentation.
