O.Torvald is a well-known Ukrainian rock band founded in Poltava in 2005. Just a year later, the musicians relocated to Kyiv, where they continued developing their career and eventually became one of the leading acts in the Ukrainian music industry. The band was founded by five musicians: vocalist and permanent frontman Yevhen Halych, guitarists Denys Myziuk and Oleksandr Nechyporenko, bassist Ihor Odariuk, and drummer Andrii Lytvynok. The name O.Torvald symbolizes energy, freedom, breaking away from convention, and uninhibited fun.
Every band has its own unique story, and O.Torvald's began in 1994 when Yevhen Halych met Denys Myziuk. It was then that they first dreamed of creating their own rock band. Powerful festival performances, large-scale tours, the deafening screams of fans, flashing cameras, widespread recognition, and popularity—this was how the friends imagined the life of rock musicians. Inspired by their passion for rock and roll, they formed their first band, Kruty! Pedali. However, the project was short-lived and ceased to exist before 2005.
On November 4, 2005, the musicians decided to begin a new chapter in their creative journey by founding O.Torvald. Several members from their previous project joined the new band, ready for fresh challenges and achievements. Less than six months later, they moved to Kyiv, where they rented a spacious private house that served both as their rehearsal studio and their shared home.
For O.Torvald, this marked the beginning of an intense period of creative work: participating in numerous competitions, searching for their own sound, and striving to win over a new audience. The band made a strong impression at festivals such as «Tavriiski Ihry», «Chervona Ruta», GBOB, «Pearls of the Season», and many others. At the same time, the musicians continued experimenting creatively, writing and recording their own songs. Some became part of their studio albums, while others remained as demo recordings, preserving the spirit of their earliest creative experiments.
At the end of 2007, Yevhen Halych's band began recording its debut album at a Kyiv studio. The tracks were mixed by Oleksandr Pipa, known as a former member of the bands VV and Attraktor. Recorded at Vesna Music Studio, the album was titled «O.Torvald – 2008» and was released in May 2008. The band also released a music video for the track «Don't Leave», marking their first significant step into professional music video production.
Following the release of their debut album, public interest in the band increased significantly. O.Torvald began appearing regularly on television, radio, and other media platforms. Their success continued with the release of the music video for «Feelings», which had been issued ahead of the album. At the beginning of 2009, Alex Baiev, an American director of Ukrainian descent, approached O.Torvald with a proposal to film two music videos. Baiev explained that he had long dreamed of working with a Ukrainian band, and this collaboration fulfilled that ambition. The band selected «Kyiv-London» from the album along with the new track «Don't Stress». O.Torvald achieved widespread recognition after releasing their second album «Inside You» in September 2011. The record firmly established the band's success on the Ukrainian music scene and introduced audiences to a new collection of hit songs.
In February 2012, O.Torvald embarked on an acoustic tour during which their live performances were recorded. The material was later refined in the studio and released as the album «Acoustic». The summer of the same year proved exceptionally busy: the band performed at 20 festivals, including Prosto Rock (alongside Linkin Park and Garbage), «Best City» (with Evanescence and The Rasmus), Ekolomyja, and others. At Global Gathering, together with DJ Tapolsky and VovKING, they presented the experimental EP «Use Us», combining electronic music with rock. Their discography later expanded with the following releases:
In 2017, O.Torvald earned the honor of representing Ukraine at the «Eurovision Song Contest» after winning the national selection. Performing the song Time, the band finished in 24th place. Over the following years, the group's line-up changed. In the spring of 2022, frontman Yevhen Halych joined the Armed Forces of Ukraine to defend his country. Nevertheless, O.Torvald continued their active creative work and remain one of the most popular bands on the Ukrainian rock scene today. The group continues to delight fans with new songs and concerts while constantly exploring fresh ideas and new sounds.
