TIK (Sobriety and Culture) is a Ukrainian band from Vinnytsia whose songs are instantly recognizable from the very first chords. The band's founder, permanent leader, and frontman is Viktor Broniuk. The group rose to nationwide fame thanks to the hits «Deer», «The Teacher», and «Sirozhyne Pirozhyne». Line-up:

Formation

The story of TIK began in 2000 in the dormitory of Vinnytsia State Pedagogical University. It was there that history student Viktor Broniuk and music education student Denys Repei first discussed creating their own band. However, the idea was only brought to life some time later. After graduating in 2003, ordinary adult life seemed far too monotonous compared to their vibrant student years. To keep their creative spark alive, the friends began meeting again in the evenings to play music and write original songs.

Their rehearsal space became Vocational School No. 19, where guitarist Kostiantyn Terepa worked as an artistic director. Later, drummer Oleksandr Filinkov joined the band, and after literally assembling a drum kit piece by piece from across Vinnytsia, the musicians formed their first complete line-up. This was how their own "Liverpool Four" came into being - equipped with vintage instruments, boundless enthusiasm, and a desire to create music that did not fit into conventional genre boundaries.

In the spring of 2005, rehearsals resumed with renewed energy. Around that time, young producer Oleh Zbarashchuk happened to attend one of the rehearsals. His first impression of the band's music was far from enthusiastic, but he was intrigued by its originality and how different it sounded from the mainstream Ukrainian music scene of the time. Zbarashchuk decided to test the audience's reaction at a live show. That opportunity came during a concert by Talita Kum, which opened its nationwide tour in Vinnytsia on June 2, 2005. It was on that stage, in front of thousands of spectators, that TIK gave its very first performance.

The debut concert proved so successful that June 2, 2005, is officially considered the band's birthday. The original line-up consisted of Viktor Broniuk (vocals, accordion), Denys Repei (bass guitar), Kostiantyn Terepa (guitar), and Oleksandr Filinkov (drums).

Origin of the band's name

The story behind the name TIK has an unexpected origin. In one of his interviews, frontman Viktor Broniuk explained that the abbreviation stands for "Sobriety and Culture," and the band deliberately writes it in capital letters.

The idea originated during their student years when the future musicians volunteered at the "Sociotherapy" center operating at a narcological clinic. There they came across old Soviet educational booklets containing a lecture course titled «Sobriety and Culture». The abbreviation TIK seemed so memorable and expressive that it eventually became the band's official name.

Creative journey

Following its successful debut, TIK began working with producer Oleh Zbarashchuk. Thanks to this partnership, the band's concerts appeared increasingly often at city events, while the musicians simultaneously expanded their repertoire and recorded new songs.

In the autumn of 2005, Yurii Martsyniuk joined the group, enriching its sound with keyboards and saxophone. During this period, the band held its first professional photo shoot and recorded its first demo, which caught the attention of renowned sound producer Vitalii Telezin. At the time, he had already worked with artists such as Okean Elzy, VV, Druha Rika, and many others. Impressed by the band's potential, Telezin agreed to produce their future releases.

Despite line-up changes, the creative process never stopped. After another series of rehearsals, demo versions of three future hits - «Deer», «Sosiura», and «The Teacher» - were recorded at Studio 211. By the spring of 2006, the band embarked on its first concerts across various Ukrainian cities. Around the same time, at the same studio, TIK and the Belarusian band Lyapis Trubetskoy recorded a new version of «Deer».

At the beginning of 2007, the band released its debut music video for «The Teacher», and on May 27, TIK presented its first album, «LiteraDYRA». During that single summer alone, the musicians played more than fifty concerts, including performances in Poland. Although the band's line-up changed several times over the years, its Vinnytsia roots, signature accordion-driven energy, and instantly recognizable style remained constant and quickly won over a loyal audience.

2008-2014

Between 2008 and 2014, TIK firmly established itself as one of Ukraine's most successful bands. During this period, the albums «Quiet» (2008) and «Wedding» (2011) were released. These years also gave birth to songs that have since become true folk favorites. The ironic tracks «Sirozhyne Pirozhyne» and «Svieta», the romantic duet with Iryna Bilyk «Don't Kiss», and the patriotic song «The Smell of War» all became essential parts of TIK's live performances and gained widespread popularity.

The band toured extensively throughout Ukraine. In 2011, the musicians set a national record by performing 24 concerts in just 30 days. Another important milestone came in 2013 with the large-scale project «The Greatest Ukrainian Hits», during which TIK performed together with the Academic Song and Dance Ensemble of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, combining contemporary music with Ukrainian musical traditions.

Creative evolution

The period from 2015 to 2026 marked a time of artistic maturity for TIK, featuring major concert tours, extensive volunteer work, and a rethinking of the band's musical direction. One of the key milestones was the release of the fourth studio album «Love Ukraine!», which defined a new patriotic chapter in the band's творчість. After its release, the musicians actively performed on the country's biggest stages, appeared at festivals, released new singles and music videos, and continued expanding their discography.

Following the outbreak of the full-scale war, the band gave one of its signature songs a new interpretation. On March 25, 2022, TIK released an updated version of «Love Ukraine!», accompanied by a modern music video, new artistic imagery, and even deeper symbolism, turning the song into a musical manifesto of the Ukrainian people's struggle.

On June 2, 2025, TIK celebrated an important milestone - the 20th anniversary of the band's career. To mark the occasion, the musicians shared archival materials, reflected on key moments of their journey, and began preparations for a major anniversary concert at Kyiv's Palace of Sports.

TIK has never limited itself to a single musical genre. Throughout the years, music critics have described the band's style as folk rock, ska punk, reggae, folk punk, or pop rock. However, the secret behind the band's popularity lies not in genre labels but in the sincerity of its music and lyrics, as well as the charisma of its frontman. Viktor Broniuk's signature accordion has long become one of the band's defining symbols, while the lively lyrics, filled with humor, irony, and everyday observations, resonate with audiences of all ages. This is why TIK's songs feel equally at home at weddings, large concerts, friendly parties, and even during everyday public transport rides.

Many fans first discover the band through lighthearted and witty hits such as «Deer», before later exploring deeper works like «The Smell of War», «Cranes», and «Love Ukraine!». Songs written during the wartime period have become symbols of resilience, unity, and faith in victory for many Ukrainians.

In its music, TIK masterfully combines sharp satire, folk humor, gentle irony about everyday life and romantic stories with profound civic-minded lyrics. This versatility has allowed the band to remain relevant for more than two decades, while its music continues to unite different generations of listeners.

Civic position

Following the beginning of the Russian aggression in 2014, TIK significantly redefined its activities. Alongside releasing new music and performing concerts, the band launched extensive volunteer initiatives and regularly performed for Ukrainian service members in the ATO and JFO combat zones.

After the start of the full-scale invasion, frontman Viktor Broniuk voluntarily joined the Territorial Defense Forces of Vinnytsia. Later, due to personal circumstances, he left military service but continued supporting the country in other ways.

Today, TIK and its permanent leader focus on large-scale charitable work, supporting military units, volunteer initiatives, and providing assistance to Ukrainian defenders.
