The artist's early years
Yevhen Halych is a Ukrainian musician, frontman of the band O.Torvald, and a radio and television host. The future star of the Ukrainian rock scene was born in the city of Bila Tserkva in the Kyiv region. He grew up in the family of a career military officer. Yevhen spent his early childhood in Kazakhstan, where his father was stationed. At the age of five, he began studying at a music school, graduating in piano and guitar. After returning to Ukraine, the family settled in Poltava. After finishing school, Yevhen even considered continuing his education at a music college, but ultimately did not pursue those plans.
Yevhen Halych received his higher education at the Poltava Military Institute of Communications, where he studied telecommunications systems and network engineering. Upon graduation, he received the rank of reserve lieutenant. During his years at the institute, the talented student never abandoned his passion for music. His university years were marked by collaborations with various local bands, primarily from Poltava's rock scene. He also began working at a local radio station. It was then that Yevhen realized his true calling was music. Setting aside a career in his profession, he moved to Kyiv to dedicate himself entirely to his creative work.
Creative journey
In 1994, in the courtyard of his home, Yevhen Halych met Denys Miziuk. The two eventually became not only best friends but also musical partners. Together, they began their musical careers in 1999, performing in the Poltava-based band «Kruty! Pedali». In 2005, they founded their own band, O.Torvald. Over time, the group began actively performing concerts, and Yevhen became fully convinced that he wanted to dedicate his life to the music industry.
In 2006, after graduating from the institute, he and the members of O.Torvald moved to Kyiv. At first, they lived in a rented apartment before settling in a private house in the Tatarka neighborhood, where they built their own recording studio. The location quickly became a hub not only for creative work but also for youth gatherings. During the early years, the band earned little income, so the musicians combined rehearsals and concerts with part-time jobs.
This continued until 2010, when O.Torvald gained widespread popularity and recognition within the Ukrainian rock community. The band's music videos began appearing regularly on Enter Music TV, and its fan base grew rapidly. The group's first major step toward success came in 2008 with the release of its self-titled debut album, «O.Torvald». The record became the starting point of Yevhen Halych's successful career in Ukrainian rock music. It established the band's distinctive style and opened opportunities for concert tours and performances at major festivals.
The artist's style and development
After releasing the album «Inside You», which included the singles «The Two of Us» and «Rock On», Yevhen Halych entered a new stage of his career. Other artists within the genre began recognizing his work, and he established strong professional relationships with Andrii Kuzmenko (Skriabin) and Andrii Khlyvniuk. Halych met the Boombox frontman at the Prosto Rock festival in 2012. Their friendship and collaboration resulted in a cover version of Liapis Trubetskoy's song «Sochi», which became a major hit. In 2015 and 2016, O.Torvald was recognized as «Ukraine's Most Festival-Featured Band».
In 2017, Yevhen Halych and O.Torvald won Ukraine's national selection for Eurovision and earned the right to represent the country with the song Time. Participation in the international competition became another opportunity to draw global attention to Ukrainian music. Despite high expectations and strong support from fans, the band ultimately finished in 24th place. Besides music, Yevhen also explored other creative fields. He hosted the television program «My First Car» on M1 and appeared in films. In the movie «The Fight Rules», he played the role of a boxer, trying his hand as an actor.
The period of the full-scale invasion
Following the beginning of Russia's full-scale invasion, the work of Yevhen Halych and O.Torvald gained new meaning, becoming an honest reflection of the frontman's own combat experience and the emotions shared by Ukrainian society. The band completely abandoned its Russian-language repertoire, translating its most famous songs into Ukrainian and focusing exclusively on creating music in Ukrainian.
The most significant work of this period became the album «Fatigue»—an honest reflection on life during wartime that explores psychological exhaustion, post-traumatic experiences, and the inner struggle familiar to millions of Ukrainians today.
Social activity
After the beginning of the full-scale invasion, the musician did not remain on the sidelines. On March 27, 2022, Yevhen Halych performed in Lviv's Market Square together with Sasha Chemerov as part of the «Ukrainian Artistic Front» project. The goal was to raise funds for the Armed Forces of Ukraine. In April of the same year, the singer joined the Armed Forces of Ukraine. Holding the rank of lieutenant, Halych served in the 135th Battalion of the 114th Separate Brigade and directly participated in the battles for Bakhmut.
In July 2026, the musician announced that he had been discharged from the Armed Forces of Ukraine due to health reasons. He currently continues volunteering and supporting his former brothers-in-arms.
Awards and distinctions
For his outstanding contribution to strengthening Ukrainian statehood, as well as for his courage and dedication, Yevhen Halych was awarded the Order «For Courage», Third Class.
Interesting facts about the musician:
- while Yevhen was studying at music school, his teachers told his mother that he would never achieve much because he was inattentive and restless. In reality, he simply found playing from sheet music uninteresting and preferred to improvise from an early age;
- before he was able to earn a living through music, he worked various part-time jobs, including as a consultant in a music store and handing out flyers on the streets;
- the singer believes that people should enjoy life, draw inspiration from those around them, and always do something meaningful for themselves and for their country. Then, everything will be alright.
