Dnipro Opera is a space of art and live emotion in the very heart of the city. The region’s cultural flagship was granted national status in 2026 and continues its important mission of bringing genuine art to people even in challenging times.

History and Location

The history of opera in Dnipro dates back to 1931, when the Dnipropetrovsk Workers’ Opera Theatre opened in the city. The modern building of the Dnipro Academic Opera and Ballet Theatre appeared much later – its grand opening took place on December 26, 1974. Since then, the theatre has continued to develop, taking part in international and Ukraine-wide festivals and competitions, while its artists have received prestigious professional awards.

Among the theatre’s productions that brought it widespread recognition are the choreographic tale «Princess Olga» and the folklore production «The Cradle of Life», set to music by the outstanding Ukrainian composer and Hero of Ukraine Yevhen Stankovych. Both masterpieces were nominated for the Taras Shevchenko National Prize of Ukraine in the «Music» category. The year 2019 was particularly eventful for the theatre, when its repertoire was expanded with several major premieres and large-scale updates. These included «The Great Waltz» in a new design, «Mr. X» and «Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs». During the same period, Giuseppe Verdi’s opera «Nabucco» returned to the repertoire with new sets and costumes.

The theatre is located on Dnipro’s main historic and business street – 72A Dmytra Yavornytskoho Avenue. A city square is located nearby, where important cultural events and gatherings of Dnipro residents usually take place.

The Modern Period

Alongside its artistic mission, charitable work remains an important part of the theatre’s activities. Artists regularly perform for Ukrainian military personnel and wounded defenders in hospitals, military hospitals and military units, helping to maintain the morale of those defending the country. The theatre has also organized free performances and concerts for veterans and internally displaced persons from the Luhansk and Donetsk regions.

Another area of activity is the participation of opera and ballet artists and musicians in charitable events supporting children undergoing treatment in the hematology department of the regional hospital.

Dnipro Opera combines a respectful attitude toward the classical tradition with a constant search for new stage solutions. Directors work with different formats, taking into account the interests and ages of modern audiences. The theatre’s work is based on preserving national and world cultural heritage and striving to reveal the true power and beauty of the performing arts to audiences.

Architectural Features and Capacity

The modern theatre building was constructed in 1974 according to a design by architect Borys Zhezherin. It became a characteristic example of Soviet modernism, combining austere geometry and monumental scale with features of monumental architecture. Unlike traditional opera theatres with lavish Baroque or Renaissance decoration, the main emphasis here is on functionality, space and clear forms. The design proved so successful that it was later used as the basis for the construction of a theatre in Ulaanbaatar.

The restrained exterior of the building contrasts with the richness of its interior spaces. The interiors feature artistic murals, stucco decoration, light marble and natural wood. Above the stage is a large and striking ceiling panel depicting the allegorical image of Orpheus flying to the realm of Hades. The theatre’s stage equipment makes it possible to implement complex directorial solutions and use large-scale scenery.

In front of the main facade is a spacious pedestrian area with a famous musical fountain. Interestingly, it was originally created as part of an engineering system connected with the air conditioning and cooling of the theatre’s premises. The auditorium has a classic horseshoe-shaped configuration, considered one of the best for acoustics. It seats 1,148 spectators and consists of the stalls, amphitheatre and balcony.

The Company

The creative company of the Dnipro Academic Opera and Ballet Theatre consists of more than 400 professionals. Among them are People’s and Honored Artists of Ukraine, experienced musicians and representatives of various stage professions. Structurally, the theatre brings together opera and ballet companies, a symphony orchestra, a choir and a large team of technical specialists who ensure the preparation and staging of performances.

Opera soloists represent the Ukrainian vocal school with distinction on international stages, while ballet artists stand out for their high level of technical and performing mastery. The coordinated work of all departments allows the theatre to stage more than 250 performances and large-scale concert programmes every year. The theatre’s Director and Artistic Director is Rostyslav Karandiieiev.

The Theatre’s Repertoire

The repertoire of Dnipro Opera combines world classics, ballet heritage and contemporary Ukrainian stage projects. The opera programme features such works as «Aida», «La Traviata», «Rigoletto», «Carmen» by Georges Bizet, «Madama Butterfly», «La Bohème» and «Turandot» by Giacomo Puccini, as well as the Ukrainian opera «The Cunning Fox» by Ihor Nebesnyi. The ballet repertoire includes «Don Quixote» by Ludwig Minkus, «Giselle» by Adolphe Adam, «The Forest Song» by Mykhailo Skorulskyi and other exquisite works.

Alongside classical productions, the theatre creates its own original projects:

• «The Snow Queen».

The concert programme includes «The Phantom of the Opera», «A Night at the Opera», Rock in the Opera and «Sympho Show». Well-known Ukrainian and international performers also regularly appear on the Dnipro stage. The theatre’s artists actively participate in international cultural projects and represent Ukraine abroad.
