Maria Burmaka is a Ukrainian singer, songwriter, musician, radio and television host, philanthropist, and People's Artist of Ukraine. The future star was born in Kharkiv into an intellectual family. Her father was a professor at Kharkiv National University, while her mother was a teacher. The family valued culture, science and art, so a love for music and creativity accompanied the girl from an early age. It was her parents who first noticed their daughter's passion and supported her first steps in music.
Growing up in an environment where knowledge and creative self-expression were valued, Maria showed an inclination toward singing from a young age. While still at school, she actively participated in concerts, festivals and music competitions. She performed both contemporary compositions and folk songs. This repertoire shaped her inner sense of national identity – a theme that would later become a recurring one throughout Maria's creative work. Frequent appearances on stage also helped her master the art of performing in front of large audiences.
After finishing school, the young woman entered Kharkiv University, choosing the Faculty of Philology. It was during her student years that her vivid charisma and songwriting talent emerged. She began writing her own songs – sincere, profound and at the same time moving. Maria Burmaka's professional creative career began while she was still a student. Her first successes (a victory at the «Oberih» festival in Lutsk in 1989 and second prize at «Chervona Ruta») opened the door to wider recognition. Soon, the «Kobza» record company released the young performer's debut cassette, titled «Oh, Do Not Bloom, Spring…».
In June 1990, the singer became a laureate of the All-Ukrainian «Dzvin» festival in Kaniv. In autumn 1991, Burmaka recorded her first compact disc on the Canadian «Yevshan» label. The album was titled «Maria» and was performed in the new age style. During the same period, the singer moved to Kyiv. Her new compositions quickly attracted listeners' attention. Following her successful discographic debut, Maria's songs confidently reached the top positions in the charts on «Promin» radio and brought the singer genuine popularity.
In the 1990s, Maria Burmaka combined her creative work with television. As part of her collaboration with television producers, she hosted her own programs on «STB» and «UT-1». By the end of the decade, the artist's popularity had extended beyond Ukraine. The singer gained a following among Polish audiences. The songs «Who Am I» and «With the Sun, Sky, Rain» became genuine hits and expanded Maria Burmaka's circle of devoted fans. A release of a collection of songs in Polish was also planned, but the idea was never brought to fruition.
2005 was particularly active in terms of international activity. The singer presented several English-language versions of her compositions and performed at charity concerts in North America. In addition to music, the Ukrainian star also shared her experience at Columbia University. An opinion leader and active civic figure, she delivered a series of lectures at the faculty club. That same year, Burmaka took part in the «Verkhovyna» festival in the United States and the Polish ethnic festival «Lemko Vatra».

She also helped organize the transportation of wounded Ukrainians to Poland for treatment.
In 2014, Burmaka actively performed in frontline cities as part of the «Support Our Own» tour. All funds raised during the concerts were transferred to support volunteer battalions. That same year, the star gave a charity solo concert in Paris. In Chicago, the artist took part in a Ukrainian festival supporting the «Heroes Assistance Fund».
In 2015, the singer held a series of charity concerts abroad. First in the United Kingdom, followed by the United States and Canada. Maria Burmaka also joined the «This Is How Memory Works» campaign, recording the song «Return to Me, My Memory» in memory of Danylo Didik and all those who died for Ukraine's independence.
With the beginning of the full-scale invasion, Maria has continued helping her country. In 2022, together with Taras Chubai, she managed to raise $100,000 to support the Armed Forces of Ukraine during their tour in the United States. Today, the artist continues to give charity performances – both for Ukrainian military personnel and for refugees abroad.
