Lutsk Independent Theater "Garmyder": Almost a Quarter Century Next to Its Audience
The Theater "Garmyder" (stylized as "GaRmyder") is a modern experimental theater founded in Lutsk in 2003. The "fathers" of the formation were Ruslana and Pavlo Porytsky, graduates of the "Blue Bird" theater-studio, and Alla Domanska. Until 2008, "Garmyder" operated on the basis of the Lesya Ukrainka Volyn State University. Then it moved to the Lutsk District House of Culture. It was then that director Ruslana Porytskaya took over the position of artistic director, who remains the head of the institution today.
The theater team creates and receives guests in the spaces of "Angar" (9 Zaliznychna St.) and "Kulturne Ukrytyk" (15 Yarovytsia St.) in Lutsk. In addition, it tours the cities of Ukraine with performances.
The theater received the status of an independent artistic structure in 2020.
Vectors of activity of the Garmyder Theater
The main direction of the team's work is the implementation of stage experiments and the search for new forms of expression. The theater's performances go beyond traditional dramaturgy and present to the public performances in the genre of plastic performance, multimedia productions, and physical theater.
Among other areas of work of the artistic team:
- mentoring in the Theater Workshop for Children and Teenagers "Upwards Drygom";
- development of the inclusive troupe "Sunshine";
- cooperation with the literary platform "Frontera", the community "Algorithm of Actions" and representatives of the community and the creative industry;
- organization of the international festival "Traveling Hanger" with the implementation of the concept of "theater outside the theater";
- presentation of Ukraine on the European stage: at festivals and cultural events in Poland, Lithuania, Latvia, the Czech Republic, Estonia, Georgia.
Creative team
About 50 people are involved in the work of the "Garmider" theater. The vast majority of the actors, as well as the creative and technical staff of the theater, do not have specialized education. At the same time, they have performed a significant part of both creative and organizational work on a voluntary basis for many years.
The team brings together representatives of different generations - among them are volunteers and active servicemen of the Defense Forces of Ukraine. The participants acquire the necessary knowledge and practical skills in the process of internal classes, trainings with invited specialists and directly while working on projects. For some of the team, theater has become not just a hobby, but a life's work - an activity that they perceive as a vocation and a full-fledged profession.
Repertoire of the Garmider Theater
The performances of the Garmider Theater are created as a response to social and cultural events. The current focus of the team is the preservation of memory, gratitude and support of creative life in conditions of full-scale war.
The theater's repertoire combines classical productions and modern artistic performances with the active use of multimedia solutions, in particular 3D visualization. Thus, the documentary-poetic performance "I am Lesya" offers a new understanding of the figure of Lesya Ukrainka, the play "Such a Life" focuses on the stories of modern women in search of meaning, and the multimedia project "Kostrubizmy. Kumanovsky" opens the audience to the world of ideas of the artist-philosopher Mykola Kumanovsky.
