Formation
The Kharkiv-based band Your Inner God emerged on the music scene in 2016. The project’s founder, main creative force, vocalist and guitarist is Kostiantyn Lysenko. Initially, Your Inner God was a solo project, but it eventually became a trio, with musicians Mark Kupin (bass) and Oleksandra Ponomarenko (drums) joining the project.Choosing the Name
Your Inner God, meaning «Your Inner God», reflects the project’s philosophical concept, which has no traditional religious undertones (the band’s founder is an atheist) and conveys existential and psychedelic ideas. The band’s work serves as a reminder that every person creates their own meaning and life principles and is therefore a god in their own universe.Creative Journey
The band’s early work was characterised by a garage-blues sound. The musicians identified themselves as part of the independent underground scene, rejecting any association with commercially oriented music. In 2018, Your Inner God released their debut album, One Tone Below. Meanwhile, Kostiantyn Lysenko jokingly — or perhaps not — contemplated one day going further than Metallica, which had performed shows on every continent, and giving a concert on Mars.
The next album, Monochromic, was recorded at On-Air Studio and released in April 2020. According to Lysenko, the album’s conceptual approach lay in the absence of concepts: listeners delve into their own inner worlds and search for their inner god. Recording the album took six months. During the mixing process, the band’s frontman faced certain difficulties after guitarist Roman and drummer Illia left the project. The approach to recording and mixing the tracks had to be changed.
Evolution of Sound
Throughout 2021–2022, Your Inner God’s sound took on heavier and darker shades. The mini-album Another Dimension was presented in the summer. In autumn 2021, the album Dead Inside was released, drawing listeners into slow-burning stoner riffs and exploring themes of destruction and the attraction of death. In February 2021, the new EP Alone & Around appeared, recorded and mixed in five days.Current Period
At the beginning of the full-scale war, Your Inner God released a stoner-prog cover of the Ukrainian song «Shchedryk». All proceeds from sales of the track on Bandcamp were directed towards helping Ukrainians affected by the Russian invasion. The band then took a creative break and returned with new releases in 2026. The project once again adopted a solo format and continued its work with the release of the tracks Full-Speed Attack and Painful Love.
Musical Style and Song Themes
The main elements of Your Inner God’s current sound are stoner rock and psychedelic rock. In their compositions, the band creates a hypnotic, unsettling atmosphere. The project experiments with rhythm and weaves a slow-burning, raw sound into its tracks. The key «instrument» in shaping the distinctive mood of Your Inner God’s work is Kostiantyn Lysenko’s characteristic vocals — sometimes garage-like, sometimes melodic. The band’s main themes include inner crises, destructive human states and psychological emptiness. Other recurring motifs include the search for one’s «self» and a sense of detachment from the real world, accompanied by immersion in the cosmic dimensions of consciousness.
Civic Position and Social Activity
Following the full-scale invasion, Your Inner God’s music became a means of supporting Ukrainians affected by hostilities and contributing to volunteer initiatives. At the same time, Kostiantyn Lysenko actively integrates Ukrainian psychedelic and stoner rock into global music culture, introducing international audiences to Ukrainian music.Discography:
