Harik Krychevsky is a Ukrainian singer-songwriter and Honored Artist of Ukraine. Throughout his creative career, he has gained widespread recognition and popularity and is now regarded as the leading symbol of classic chanson on the Ukrainian music scene.
The Artist’s Early Years
Harik Krychevsky is an artist whose voice has been associated for more than three decades with the warmth of Lviv’s streets, the romance of Kyiv, and heartfelt stories filled with sincerity. The future singer was born in 1963 in Lviv into a family of doctors. Although he was named Heorhii at birth, for millions of fans he has always remained Harik.
His parents, who devoted their lives to medicine, raised their son in an atmosphere of respect for people, discipline, and responsibility. At the age of five, he began studying piano at a music studio, marking the beginning of his lifelong connection with music. Lviv, with its historic architecture, rainy streets, cobblestones, and unique local character, became the primary source of creative inspiration for the future performer.
First Steps Toward Creative Independence
At the age of 14, Harik formed his own vocal and instrumental band, where he played bass guitar and wrote his first songs. Although these early compositions reflected his youth, they already displayed his distinctive lyrical style, sincerity, and attention to human emotions.
After graduating from school in 1980, he worked for some time as an orderly at an ambulance station to help support his family. This experience gave Krychevsky a deeper understanding of people’s lives, something that would later be reflected in many of his songs.
In 1982, Heorhii enrolled at the Lviv State Medical Institute. Even while studying medicine, he never left the stage, performing in the student vocal and instrumental ensemble and playing in the orchestra of the Romantic Youth Palace. Despite the demands of the medical profession, music gradually occupied an increasingly important place in his life. By the late 1980s, Harik had recorded his first home demos. Although these recordings have not survived, they marked the beginning of his professional career.
The Beginning of His Musical Career
Harik Krychevsky never set out to become a star or conquer the entertainment industry. Above all, he saw himself as a doctor, continuing his family's medical tradition that had already spanned four generations. Nevertheless, even while working in medicine, he continued writing songs, performing with his band, and giving concerts in Lviv’s nightclubs.
The years of Perestroika became a difficult period for Ukrainian healthcare. The institution where Krychevsky worked also faced serious challenges. At that point, music became not only a passion but also a source of income, prompting the artist to perform more actively and focus on recording his own material. In the early 1990s, Harik even considered moving permanently to Germany, where many of his friends had already settled. However, after spending several months abroad, he realized he wanted to return home and moved back to Ukraine.
First Releases
His first attempt to record an album proved unsuccessful. The studio recommended by an acquaintance never officially released the record, while the recorded songs were distributed among music enthusiasts without the artist’s permission. As a result, the songs became popular, but the performer received no financial benefit. At the same time, Harik and a close friend opened their own video rental business. Thanks to the income it generated, he was finally able to fulfill his long-standing dream. In 1992, his debut album, «Kyiv Girl», was officially released.
Even greater success followed with the release of «Pryvokzalna» in 1994. The album became a bestseller, achieving record sales within a year and firmly establishing Harik Krychevsky as one of Ukraine’s most popular performers.
Development of His Music Career
Following his rapid success, the artist received numerous offers from producers and concert managers. However, Harik Krychevsky consistently refused to work according to the imposed rules of show business, choosing instead to remain an independent artist. Because of this position, many of his hits were denied radio airplay, while some television appearances were even canceled.
Despite these obstacles, his popularity continued to grow. Two years later, the musician released the album «Day Off», which brought him even greater recognition and expanded his audience. Soon afterward, he entered a period of intensive touring. Concert tours across Ukraine, Israel, the United States, and many other countries, along with radio broadcasts, television appearances, and strong album sales, established Harik Krychevsky as one of the leading representatives of the genre.
His songs remain popular to this day, while many of his albums continue to find new listeners years after their release. The singer is a welcome guest at major concerts, festivals, and cultural events. He regularly releases new songs, records duets with well-known performers, and continues his active creative work. Throughout his career, Harik Krychevsky has released 11 studio albums, each becoming part of the history of Ukrainian popular music.

Harik Krychevsky is widely recognized as one of the best-known representatives of Ukrainian urban singer-songwriter music. His style combines the traditions of classic chanson, pop music, and contemporary popular sound. The artist deliberately rejected the excessive harshness often associated with chanson, instead emphasizing warmth, intelligence, and melodic arrangements. Following the beginning of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, Harik Krychevsky openly expressed his position toward the aggressor and demonstrated his patriotism. Despite holding German citizenship and having a fully established life abroad, he consciously chose to remain in Ukraine together with his family. From the very first days of the full-scale invasion, the singer addressed his fans through social media, telling the world the truth about the events unfolding in Ukraine.
Since the outbreak of the full-scale war, the artist has actively participated in volunteer initiatives. Funds raised during his charity concerts have been directed toward supporting the Armed Forces of Ukraine and children's hospitals.
At the same time, Harik Krychevsky began extensively reworking his musical legacy. He translated his iconic hits, including «Kyiv Girl» and «My Number 245», into Ukrainian and removed all references to the aggressor state from their lyrics. In doing so, the artist not only refreshed his best-known songs but also reaffirmed his commitment to Ukrainian culture and the ongoing development of the country's music industry.
