Pie and Whip

About the artist

Pirig and Batig is the language of the Krai in musical, poetic and song form

Pyrig and Batig is a Lviv folk band created in 2020 by Maryan Pyrog. In addition to the founder of the project Maryan (vocals, guitar), the team today includes:
  • Markiyan Turkanyk (singing, violin);
  • Lesyk Omodada (percussion);
  • Kristov Vykov (bassoon);
  • Yuri Khvostov (Oboe);
  • Artem Kamenkov (double bass).

The name of the band owes the name of the founder to the word "Cake". And "whip" in the name of the project has a special, metaphorical meaning: it demonstrates the transition of the function of the whip from a punitive to an educational plane. After all, the band's work is the sung works of Ukrainian artists tortured by the Soviet authorities in the period 1918-1986.

"A metaphorical call between the past and the present, in which we cherish the memory of all the murdered and honor these times with their works"

This is how the project participants characterize their modern creativity. Among their major works is the mystery album "Spivmovny", material based on the poetry of Mykhailo Petrenko, Pavel Tychyna, and Taras Shevchenko. In particular, the album "Zeleny" was released in 2023 to the lyrics of Bohdan-Ihor Antonych, which reflected the musicians' attempt to immerse the listener in the mystical world of the author's work. In the spring of 2024, "Pyrig and Batig" released the album "Zamorodovani. The first call", which became the first of three planned collections of poems by destroyed Ukrainian artists. The band's creativity is a powerful amulet for the entire country and its defenders today. "Cake and Whip" is always intellectual and tasteful.
