sportcafé is a Ukrainian post-punk / noise rock band that devoted fans describe as a true noise rock machine tearing across the country like a rebellious whirlwind. The band stands out for its distinctive approach to post-punk, built on rejecting the genre's established conventions.
History
Before moving into experiments with noise rock and hardcore punk, the musicians performed under the name Povod for nearly five years, primarily based in Zaporizhzhia. At that time, the lineup included vocalist Lidiia Yurieva, guitarists Mykyta Skokovskyi and Illia Kharchenko, bassist Vitalii Perets, as well as several drummers who changed throughout that period. The band developed its own vision of post-punk, significantly different from the popular "panel-house" sound of the time. Their music was strongly influenced by the industrial character of Zaporizhzhia, which the members themselves often compared to Manchester, England. The city's landscape, factory atmosphere, and harsh aesthetic became an essential part of their sound.
At the beginning, the band's style was described as indie rock with prominent post-punk elements, although the musicians themselves never wanted to confine their work to a single genre. They constantly searched for new creative solutions, experimented with sound, and were never afraid to step beyond established conventions.
After the beginning of the full-scale invasion, the band's life changed dramatically. A Russian missile struck the building where the members lived in Zaporizhzhia, after which the musicians relocated to Mukachevo at the invitation of drummer Myroslav Sviderok. As the artists themselves recall, they lived there free of charge for almost a year while gradually rebuilding their lives and rediscovering their desire to create music.
During one of their casual jam sessions, everyone felt the urge to create something entirely new. Mykyta picked up a bass guitar, and the music immediately took on a much heavier, more punk-oriented character. At first, the band consisted of just three members - Lidiia, Myroslav, and Mykyta. Later, they realized they needed another musician, but the members immediately agreed that they did not want to create "Povod No. 2." That is why Illia Kharchenko joined the new project, followed shortly afterward by Vitalii Perets. This is how the new band, sportcafé, was born, completely changing its creative direction and opening a new chapter in its history.
The Name
The story behind the name sportcafé came about entirely by accident. As vocalist Lidiia Yurieva recalls, the musicians were simply sitting together, joking around, when they unexpectedly came up with the new name during their conversation.
Mykyta Skokovskyi explains it even more simply. Most of the members do not drink alcohol, but they often noticed numerous signs for sports bars. At one point, someone suggested: if there are sports bars, why not call the band "sportcafé"? The name turned out to be lighthearted, ironic, easy to remember, and perfectly suited the band's personality.
Creative Journey
At first, sportcafé attracted audiences through their powerful live performances. The band appeared multiple times at the «Dirty Dog» festival, regularly performed at Kyiv's Otel' club, and gradually expanded their concert geography by touring different cities across Ukraine. It was their live energy that quickly earned them their first loyal fans.
Debut Album
The band's success was firmly established in the spring of 2026 with the release of their debut full-length album Go-punk. Nearly a year of intensive studio work passed between the release of the first single «The Individual» and the album itself. According to the musicians, the album's initial sound gradually evolved through experimentation with different instruments, recording techniques, and modern audio processing tools.
Mykyta explained that he constantly explored new technologies, watched professional videos, and tested various plugins in pursuit of the most natural sound possible - as if the entire album had been recorded together in a single room without unnecessary studio polish. As a result, each new single sounded slightly different from the previous one, while the album's final sound became the outcome of a long creative search.
Alongside the technical experiments, the band's musical influences also changed. Each song emerged under the influence of different music the members were listening to at the time, making Go-punk a collection of all their inspirations. As a result, the Ukrainian music scene received a bold, high-quality, and at the same time rare example of contemporary noise rock. The album is permeated by a surreal atmosphere of hopelessness. Within this emotional space emerges the cry of a person who can no longer exist within the boundaries of the familiar order of things. It is no coincidence that the release's unofficial motto became the words: «either punk or perish».
Creative Growth
Following the album's release, the musicians embarked on a concert tour across Ukraine and began preparing for a performance at Ukraine's largest rock festival, Faine Misto. At the same time, Mykyta Skokovskyi and Vitalii Perets continue serving in the Defense Forces of Ukraine while combining military service with their musical careers.
Musical Style and Themes
In shaping its sound, sportcafé deliberately rejects an overly "plastic" studio sound. Instead, the musicians consciously choose a raw, honest, and максимально live recording approach that conveys the genuine energy of their performances.
According to the members, they always felt too explosive for traditional post-punk. Their temperament demanded greater freedom, risk, and intensity, so their music gradually evolved toward punk. At the same time, the band has not abandoned its roots - some tracks still contain post-punk elements, a genre the musicians genuinely love and consider one of the most fascinating in contemporary music.
For sportcafé, the most important thing is not meeting other people's expectations but constantly searching for something new. Their music is built on a willingness to take risks, go against the current, and create something sincere, emotional, and even creatively dangerous. That is why alongside more accessible songs, listeners can also hear experimental tracks that deliberately break genre conventions.
Live Performance Atmosphere
For the band, studio recordings and concerts are two completely different worlds. During live performances, the musicians allow themselves significant improvisation, change song structures, and often transform each show into a completely new experience even for their own fans.
The band is also known for its love of unconventional formats. A vivid example was the «Anti-Headline Show» at Kyiv's Otel' club, where instead of a traditional solo concert, sportcafé shared the stage with five additional independent bands.
The musicians themselves admit that they do not strive to create a carefully defined aesthetic or a deliberately crafted image. For them, everything is determined by their mood, which can change dozens of times throughout the day. They remain exactly who they are - punks for whom freedom is more important than any rules.
Future Goals
The members of sportcafé do not build rigid development strategies or strive at all costs to achieve specific milestones of popularity or awards. Instead, they remain open to any creative opportunities, concerts, festivals, collaborations, and unexpected ideas.
What the musicians enjoy most is performing live, always trying to make each concert more exciting than the previous one. They are driven by the constant desire to create new music, discover fresh sounds, and never lose their inner passion. They consider this state to be the primary driving force behind their creativity.
The band members acknowledge that the future cannot be calculated or planned step by step. For them, the most important thing is to move forward together, preserve their inspiration, support one another, and remain honest with themselves and their audience. This philosophy is the foundation of sportcafé's continued development.
Civic Position
After the beginning of the full-scale war in 2022, the band adopted a clear and principled civic stance. The musicians completely removed all songs recorded in Russian from streaming platforms and openly spoke out against the so-called "sharovarshchyna" in contemporary music. In their view, Ukrainian culture should develop through an honest search for its own identity.
Social engagement has become an inseparable part of sportcafé's life. The band members combine their musical work with genuine support for their country. In particular, Mykyta Skokovskyi and Vitalii Perets completed basic military training and joined the Armed Forces of Ukraine. Whenever their military duties allow, the musicians return to the stage.
Every live show, festival, and charity performance becomes not only a creative event but also an opportunity to raise funds for the needs of Ukraine's defenders. Today, sportcafé's activities unite contemporary music, civic responsibility, and a sincere belief in the strength of Ukrainian culture.
