Mika Newton (Oksana Hrytsai) is a Ukrainian pop rock singer and actress. The performer rose to popularity in Ukraine in the mid-to-late 2000s, when her hits were played on radio stations across the country and became soundtracks for popular television series. In 2011, the singer represented Ukraine at «Eurovision», where she performed the song «Angel» and took fourth place.
The Artist’s Formation
Mika Newton’s real name is Oksana Hrytsai. She comes from Ivano-Frankivsk region, where she spent her childhood. The future star grew up in a family where music played a special role. Her mother worked as a nurse, while her father ran a car service station, but both parents were also involved in creative activities. In his youth, her father was passionate about playing the guitar, and Oksana inherited her love of music from her great-grandfather, who had taught himself to play the instrument and later often performed at weddings.
It is hardly surprising that the future star’s childhood was filled with musical interests. Her grandfather played the violin and also performed at weddings, while her father, according to the singer’s memories, had always been a «musical person» and dreamed of having a son who would become an artist. Instead of a son, however, it was his daughter who eventually conquered the stage.
From the age of five, Oksana and her older sister would organize their own concerts at home. When her father taught her how to use a VCR and insert tapes, the girl could spend hours watching concert recordings of famous artists, memorizing their songs and imitating what she saw. In order to finally make her parents consider a career on stage for their daughter, she deliberately sang loudly and for long periods of time.
Education and Training
At the age of eight, her family eventually gave in and enrolled the girl in music school. Oksana studied piano and simultaneously took vocal lessons. From the age of nine, she was already appearing on stage and taking part in various competitions. In 1996, she released her first album of children’s songs.
After finishing school, Hrytsai decided to devote her life entirely to music and in 2001 entered the Kyiv State College of Variety and Circus Arts, where she studied pop vocals. Thus, her childhood passion gradually developed into a professional career.
Creative Career
An important step toward widespread recognition was Mika Newton’s victory at the «Black Sea Games» festival in Skadovsk in 2002. That same year, the singer signed a contract with producer Yurii Falyosa, who suggested the stage name Mika Newton.
Soon, the artist released her first music video for the song «To Escape». However, Ukrainian television channels refused to broadcast the video because of its explicitly social message and its «exposure» of problems in the country. This was followed by a video for the song «Anomaly», which brought the Carpathian-born singer her first widespread popularity.
Her subsequent releases only increased attention to the young singer. One after another, music videos for «Lunopark» and «In Captivity» appeared, and both songs quickly became hits. In 2005, Mika Newton released her debut album and almost immediately began working on her second record, «Warm River».
Expanding Her Audience and Working with a New Producer
The artist’s songs gradually went far beyond the radio and television format – they were used as soundtracks for popular films and television series, including «Cadets», «I’m Flying», and «From 180 and Above».
In 2009, her collaboration with Yurii Falyosa came to an end. Mika Newton terminated the contract and successfully defended her right to continue performing under her stage name, while also gaining the opportunity to independently perform and control her own repertoire. After that, her producer became Tymofii Nahornyi.
The Story Behind Her Stage Name
The origin of the artist’s stage name had a very specific explanation. The name «Mika» was inspired by the names of famous musicians – Mick Jagger of the Rolling Stones and Mick Box of Uriah Heep. The producer connected the second part of the stage name with the English expression «new tone» – Newton.
«Eurovision 2011»
On February 26, 2011, one of the most significant events in Mika Newton’s career took place – with the song «Angel», she won Ukraine’s national selection for «Eurovision». The artist’s victory was secured by all three voting channels: SMS messages, online voting, and the jury’s scores.
On May 12, 2011, the performer took the stage during the second «Eurovision» semifinal in Düsseldorf, performing sixth, and earned the right to compete in the final. The decisive concert took place on May 14. In the «Eurovision 2011» final, Mika Newton performed «Angel» and finished fourth with 159 points.
An important part of the Ukrainian performer’s act was the sand animation created by Kseniia Symonova. The visual performance enhanced the emotional impact of the song and helped make the performance one of the most memorable moments of the competition for the Ukrainian audience.
Career in the United States
After her success at «Eurovision», Mika Newton moved to California with the goal of developing an international career. There, the American JK-music group offered the singer and her producer Tymofii Nahornyi a partnership and assistance in promoting the artist on the Western market.
In the United States, the Ukrainian singer worked with musician Randy Jackson. Initially, the singer planned to stay overseas until 2013, but subsequent circumstances changed her plans. In 2014, Mika announced that she no longer wanted to continue her singing career. During this period, she began appearing in commercials, took part in photo shoots for glossy magazines, and walked the runway. In particular, the artist participated in shows by Ukrainian and international designers in the United States.
In 2017, Mika Newton appeared in the documentary «The American Dream. In Search of Truth». The following year, her personal life also changed – in December 2018, the singer married Chris Saavedra, owner of the American modeling agency Saint Agency.
Connection with Ukraine
After moving to the United States, Mika began communicating more frequently with Ukrainian media and talking about her life overseas. During these interviews, the artist gradually switched to speaking Ukrainian. She admitted that her American dream had not been fully realized, although she did not regret moving abroad.
In the United States, the singer released the album «Come Out And Play», which included various remixes of the title track. Her American period also saw the release of her only Ukrainian-language single to date, «Don’t Let Go».
The Modern Period of Her Career
In 2022, Mika Newton took part in a particularly important international musical event. Together with American performer John Legend, bandura player Susana Iglidan, and poet Liuba Yakimchuk, she performed at the «Grammy Awards» ceremony in a special segment intended to draw attention to the war in Ukraine. Before the performance, viewers were shown a video address by President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.
In 2025, the singer presented a Ukrainian version of one of her songs – a composition that received the title «In Captivity». She performed it during a charity event in New York.
For a long time, Mika Newton made almost no appearances on the major Ukrainian stage. However, in 2026, she returned to Ukraine for the first time in many years and performed at the «Pokolinnya» festival in Kyiv and Odesa. Thus, after a long break, the singer once again met her Ukrainian audience in person.
Musical Style
Mika Newton’s musical style has undergone a noticeable transformation throughout her career. At the beginning of her career, her music was shaped around energetic pop rock and alternative pop with a characteristic rebellious teenage attitude. From the very beginning, one of the artist’s defining features was her exceptionally powerful voice, combined with hard guitar riffs, live instrumentation, and emotional intensity in her performances.
After moving to the United States, Mika’s sound became more refined and closer to mainstream English-language pop music with electronic elements. In her modern creative period, the focus shifted even further – from her former drive toward atmosphere, mature lyricism, and emotionally rich yet sensual vocals.
Themes of Her Songs
The themes of the performer’s songs also changed along with her life experience. Her early tracks focused on teenage emotions, unrequited love, inner conflicts, and the desire to escape from everyday life. During the «Eurovision» period and the American stage of her career, themes of freedom, hope, faith in one’s own abilities, and the search for one’s true path in life became increasingly prominent.
Today, the central themes of Mika Newton’s songs include spiritual recovery, resilience in the face of hardship, and the struggle for freedom. Personal experience, an international career, and the experience of war have shaped a new emotional depth in the singer’s work.
Civic Position
Mika Newton’s position on social issues today is clear and consistent. The artist openly supports Ukraine, condemns Russian aggression, and uses her international recognition to help her homeland.
On the third day of the full-scale war, Mika flew from Los Angeles to Poland. There, for three weeks, she directly helped Ukrainian women, children, and elderly people who had been forced to leave their homes because of the hostilities.
The war has a personal dimension for the singer. Her sister Liliia has been a career military service member for more than 25 years and defends Ukraine in the Armed Forces. The star dedicated her performance at the «Grammy Awards» to her sister as well as to all Ukrainian soldiers.
Social Activity
The artist regularly takes part in charity events in the United States. She has performed in Times Square in New York, as well as in San Francisco, Miami, and Seattle. Funds raised during such events are directed toward humanitarian assistance for Ukrainians.
Another important part of her work is providing informational support for Ukraine. On social media and in interviews with American media outlets, Mika Newton speaks about the need not to let the world become accustomed to the war and not to allow «war fatigue» to take hold in the West. She calls on international audiences to continue supporting Ukraine, donating, and sharing truthful information about Russian aggression.
